Madrugada has been Norway’s biggest band in over a decade, and the reunion three years ago, eleven years after they left, was extremely successful. What should have been a couple of concerts at Oslo Spektrum based on the 20th anniversary of the powerful debut album «Industrial Silence», has become almost 100. Now they are back with their first studio album in 14 years and concerts in Oslo Spektrum (with 1500 viewers) 4 and 5 February. A longer tour is planned.

Everything But The Girl was formed in 1982 by singer-songwriter-musicians Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt. Acclaimed for their tender-tough lyrics, Thorn’s unique voice and Watt’s arrangements, they released a string of UK gold albums throughout the 1980s experimenting with jazz, guitar pop, orchestral wall-of-sound and drum-machine soul, through to the 90’s, ending on ‘Temperamental’, where the duo chose to quit on a high. Tracey focused on family life away from the spotlight before returning with a run of solo albums and best-selling autobiographical books. Ben moved into DJing and remixing, and launched the respected electronic label, Buzzin’ Fly. He returned to his singer-songwriter roots with a trilogy of solo albums from 2014-2020. In November 2022 Everything But The Girl announced they had recorded a new studio album – the first for over two decades, released in 2023.

Born in 1624, Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli was brought up partly in Venice and ended up in Innsbruck as a member of the Court Band. His name crops up later as a violinist in churches and at court in Messina and finally in Madrid, where it is likely that he died in 1687. There were two important stylistic periods for violin literature in the 17th century. In the early decades, a corpus of instrumental music appeared in northern Italy, with the first solo music explicitly for violin being written by composers such as Castello, Fontana and – most of all – Marini. Towards the tail-end of the century, we see the flowering of a refined culture of instrumental music in Austria, dominated by virtuosi such as Biber, Walther and Schmelzer. Pandolfi Mealli was caught in the middle, not being a follower of either school, and may have been somewhat lost from view among all these star performers.

The Stralsund skyline with its brick church towers rises impressively above Strela Sound. While today this view can mainly be seen by those who approach Stralsund via the Rügen Bridge, the city has appeared in this way to arriving seafarers since the Middle Ages. As one of the Hanseatic cities lined up like pearls on southern Baltic Sea beaches, Stralsund had achieved a degree of economic prosperity as a member of the Hanseatic League since the 13th century. Closely networked with other Hanseatic cities such as Lübeck, Wismar and Rostock and governed by councillors and mayors from the upper class of merchants, the Hanseatic League not only guaranteed economic security but also facilitated cultural exchange. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the alliance gradually disintegrated due to growing European competition. However, Stralsund remained a city of trade and Baltic exchange.

Son rôle d’éclaireur est salué pour avoir dynamité les cloisons entre les genres, radicalité rock et légèreté pop – jusqu’au yéyé –, en montrant que l’on pouvait à la fois se revendiquer du Velvet Underground et de Sylvie Vartan, de Syd Barrett et d’Astrud Gilberto, une attitude ouverte qui définit aujourd’hui la scène française. Sans compter que l’élégance et la discrétion de cet éternel adolescent de 67 ans lui garantissent un fort capital de popularité, qu’il pourra constater à l’automne avec une tournée des Zénith de France et une apothéose à l’Accor Arena de Paris-Bercy, le 22 décembre.

As difficult times often beget new beginnings, the COVID-19 quagmire gave birth to alto saxophonist Eric Alexander.

To some, a tenor-to-alto switch may not seem to be a newsworthy matter, but for the initiated it’s the stuff of headlines. An inveterate tenor at the apex of the scene for more than three decades, Eric put the alto away in his teen years and never looked back. “But with the dearth of opportunities to play during the pandemic, I started to work on it,” he confesses.

After successfully pitching the idea of using his second saxophone-with-strings project as a debut on alto, the present recording is quite simply astounding. Working with his regular rhythm section and adding ace string arrangements, this altoist delivers one revelatory performance after another.
