Born in 1971, Marco lo Muscio is an organist, pianist and composer who has performed on the great organs of Europe and the US. His own music been performed by the likes of Christopher Herrick, Thomas Trotter and David Briggs. This album focuses on another, more intimate side of his output. There are pieces dedicated to his mother and to the memory of his late father; tributes to both Debussy and Satie; meditations on literary themes from the work of J.R.R. Tolkien in a neo-medieval style; a pair of ricercari originally composed for organ, paying homage to Renaissance-era counterpoint; and to begin with Three American Preludes.

The Opera-Oratorio Passio Christi narrates the events of the Lords Passion from the Last Supper to the dawn of Resurrection. The story is told through the feelings and emotions of some of the characters who took part in it in various ways: Peter, Judas, the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, the Cyrenean, the soldier Longinus and the Angels. Each character sings the verses of the saints and poets of the world in a different language (Italian, English, French, Russian, Spanish, Latin and ancient Greek) to represent the whole world before the mystery of human suffering. The dramatic structure of the Opera follows the ancient structure of the Sacred Representations: in fact, its original form is designed for dramatization and scenic action. The events of the Gospel are interspersed with the arias of the various characters, which constitute a sort of cinematographic still image.

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, a grandson of Agostino’s, was born in Venice on March 4th, 1678. His father, Giambattista, who was requested by Legrenzi to enter the of St. Mark in 1685, taught him to play violin (there is no evidence of other teachers) and was indeed a good teacher for Vivaldi, only at the age of ten, could take his father’s place in the orchestra. Vivaldi, after a rapid rise through the minor orders, was ordained on March 23rd, 1703 and was then appointed teacher at the, a girl orphanage in Venice. How Vivaldi could thereafter attain the high level attested by musical history as a composer as well as his success as a teacher, witnessed by the contemporary chronicles, remains a mystery, as it is often the case with such geniuses as he was.

Cardinals Benedetto Pamphili and Pietro Ottoboni played a prominent role in Rome at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with their patronage of the three most important composers of the day, Corelli, Alessandro Scarlatti and Handel. At that time, numerous musicians converged on Rome, and the large orchestra directed by Arcangelo Corelli at the church of San Luigi dei Francesi included several famous cellists, among them G. L. Lular, N. F. Haym, F. Amadei and G. M. Perroni. As well as notable virtuosos, these men were often also composers of oratorios, vocal music, and pieces for their own favourite instrument, though very few of these have survived. It is to their music, often unpublished, that Marco Ceccato and his Accademia, winners of a Diapason d’Or of the year in 2015, introduce us here, along with works by the composers who subsequently formed the core of this group after Handel left for London: G. Bononcini, P. G. P. Boni, and G. B. Costanzi, who was later to teach Boccherini.

Only a few works from Pjotr Tschaikowski’s huge oeuvre have gained general acceptance, however, these are of such an enduring nature that the Russian is ranked among the great composers in the history of music. The way the world of music highlights especially his last three symphonies, his Piano Concerto No. 1, his opera Eugen Onegin and his Rococo Variations is nothing less than extraordinary. However, in comparison to his entire oeuvre, this selection can hardly be called representative.

This new recording pays tribute to an ill-known, mysterious figure of 18th-century Naples: Prince Raimondo di Sangro. A soldier, scientist, poet, alchemist and freemason, he bequeathed us a palace and a magnificent chapel, the site of a tragedy that was at the origin of the murder committed by the great composer Gesualdo.

This chapel still houses artistic and scientific works both beautiful and mysterious, which serve as an initiatory itinerary for the visitor. The intuition of Guido Morini and Marco Beasley was to use this itinerary and make it the dramatic framework for a singular, innovative work that they have entitled Solve et Coagula, an alchemist maxim meaning ‘Dissolve and congeal’. A veritable dramma per musica, this work calls on different ‘historical’ creative processes in order to let us discover a unique story, featuring the rhythm of tarantellas, ostinati and mysterious fugues…

Marco Beasley offers us an original way to discover the Italian religious repertoire for two tenors of the nascent Baroque. In fact, his fantastic experience as a singer allowed him to record these ‘sacred concerts for two voices’ alone, thanks to the technique of re-recording. A new dimension opens up to the listener thanks to the astonishing artistic coherence offered by this technique. And beyond technique, this disc attests to the emotion, both double and unique, guiding the musical gesture.

In addition, this recording will allow to discover numerous unjustly forgotten composers such as Donati, Caprioli, Giamberti, Sances et al., whose qualities of writing are comparable to those of the great Monteverdi (represented here by the Salve Regina and Jubilet tota civitas).

The programme is judiciously rounded off by three magnificent sonate da chiesa by Castello, Marini and Fontana. On no account should this blockbuster disc be missed!

The album arises from an unusual, but extremely convincing symbiosis of two instruments: the nyckelharpa (also called key fiddle), which has survived in Sweden from the Renaissance to this day and has now become an essential part of Scandinavian musical life beyond this country, unfolds through the numerous resonant strings create their fascinating sound with a dazzling overtone spectrum and at the same time a wonderfully warm smoky depth. Since his highly praised Carnegie Hall début in New York City, the saxophonist Marco Albonetti has been engaged for performances and master-classes around the world. He has appeared at countless Italian theatres and numerous distinguished international venues. Albonetti first discovered the music of Piazzolla on the day he died – 4th July 1992 – when RAI reported the news and broadcast his music. Albonetti’s fascination for his music has persisted from that day forward. Traveling to Buenos Aires to research his doctoral dissertation, Albonetti had the privilege of examining the composer’s original manuscript scores and interviewing people who had worked closely with Piazzolla: his wife, Laura Escalada, his librettist Horacio Ferrer, and his fellow musicians Pablo Ziegler, Daniel Binelli, José Bragato, and Arturo Schneider. This album features his Albonetti’s own arrangements for saxophone and chamber orchestra, described by Piazzolla’s publisher as “a splendid piece of work, impeccably executed, and a demonstration of great respect for the music of Maestro Piazzolla”.
