The trumpeter, then just 19, teams up with baritonist Pepper Adams, pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones for a particularly strong set that is highlighted by a lengthy and fiery “Night in Tunisia,” “Lover Man” and a rapid rendition of “Just One of Those Things.” Morgan plays remarkably well for his age (already ranking just below Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis), making this an essential acquisition.

Classical music is full of child prodigies but they are somewhat rare in jazz. Lee Morgan was an exception, for he was a brilliant trumpeter while still a teenager. His musical genius is difficult to explain; but easy to hear. Lee Morgan emerged fully formed technically along with a crackling intensity and passion that was a joy to experience. By the time he recorded Candy in 1959, the 20-year old had already led five albums for Blue Note, and had logged valuable time with not only the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, but also as a member of (what some consider) the finest edition of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Candy is a unique item in Morgan’s history for it is the only quartet album that Morgan ever recorded. In fact, no other horns were needed! Candy features the trumpeter playing with beauty, fire, passion and a mature lyricism exceeding most musicians double his age. Joined by a rhythm section of young giants including pianist Sonny Clark, Morgan burns on the faster pieces but puts plenty of feeling into “All The Way,” the soulful “Since I Fell For You” and “Personality.” At 20, Lee Morgan was already a modern master and, from this point forward, considered one of the great trumpet men of jazz. Who said that youth was wasted on the young?

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Columbia – Legacy

One of the most interesting second-division California psychedelic musicians, keyboardist Lee Michaels was one of the most soulful white vocalists of the late ’60s and early ’70s. Between 1968 and 1972, he released half a dozen accomplished albums on A&M that encompassed Baroque psychedelic pop and gritty white, sometimes gospel-ish R&B with equal facility. A capable songwriter, Michaels was blessed with an astonishing upper range, occasionally letting loose some thrilling funky wails. In 1971, he landed a surprise Top Ten single with “Do You Know What I Mean,” one of the best and funkiest AM hits of the early ’70s.

Michaels keyboard-based sound does not change from his earlier albums although he does try using a synth here, and has replaced booming organ with piano. What is different is the writing. Michaels has given up 1960s heaviness for condensed, streamlined songs. Nothing wrong with this given that this was the early 1970s, tightening your keyboard sound is miles above sailing smackface into ELP goop. And there is an easy going, bluesy feeling which Michaels polishes to his advantage, sometimes even getting suddenly funky.

Lee Konitz, Pony Poindexter, Phil Woods, Leo Wright – Alto Summit (1968/2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/88,2kHz]

Lee Konitz, Pony Poindexter, Phil Woods, Leo Wright – Alto Summit (1968/2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 45:42 minutes | 878 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © MPS

Alto Summit features four post Charlie Parker saxophone greats. Lee Konitz has been a major force in bop, cool jazz, and the Avant-garde. Pony Poindexter’s play has a more bluesy feel; he recorded with everyone from Parker to Lambert Hendricks and Ross. Named top alto saxophonist in some 30 Downbeat polls Phil Woods, was best known for his own bands, whose recordings won four Grammys, while Leo Wright is known for his work with Dizzy Gillespie, and the likes of Nat Adderley and Kenny Drew. The four are backed by an ace rhythm section including pianist Steve Kuhn, of John Coltrane fame. On the bluesy Native Land, Wright shouts out the theme. Solo order is Lee, Phil, Pony, and then Lee. There’s lots of soul on the medley of classic ballads, as Leo takes on the first piece, then Pony, Phil, and last, Lee; it ends in a stunning group improv. With its modernist theme, Prompt is a showstopper, with Leo, Pony, Lee, and then Phil upstaging each other. The Perils of Poda strikes out with a piano solo before Phil, Lee, Pony, and then Leo take over. Pony’s funky Good Booty features Pony and Phil, while Lee-o’s Blues has Leo and Lee taking a leisurely walk on the soulful side. Lee’s Tribute to Bach and Bird combines a Bach chorale cantata with a Charlie Parker solo and features both duo and collective alto play. Four alto masters combine their distinctive styles in a jazz tour de force.

Lee Konitz & Dan Tepfer – Snapshots of an unusual duo: Legendary alto saxophonist Lee Konitz and young pianist Dan Tepfer have been forming a musical team for around ten years…. After playing now for 60+ years, it’s still very challenging for me to play a simple melody and have it clean and touch the reed at the proper time in the proper way. … I could stop and say, well that was a D minor, G seven, but I really don’t want to know that. I just want to know that there’s a combination of notes that makes a sound.
