In a not entirely unexpected move, Parlophone will issue David Bowie‘s Welcome To the Blackout (Live London ’78) as a two-CD set in June.
This live album was taken from performances in London in June/July 1978 on Bowie’s Isolar II tour and was mixed by Bowie and David Richards a month after the tour ended, in January 1979.
The recordings were unreleased until Record Store Day 2018, when this was issued as a triple vinyl package and it became the best-selling release from that day.
The two-CD edition of Welcome To the Blackout will be issued on 29 June 2018. On the same date, a red vinyl edition of the Christiane F. soundtrack will be released on RED vinyl, along with a 10-inch black vinyl edition of the Baal EP (the tracks from which were included on Re:Call 3 in the A New Career In A New Town box set). Both of these vinyl releases will only be available in ‘Bricks and Mortar’ record stores (i.e. physical shops).

The Width of a Circle, a new posthumous David Bowie album comprised of unreleased tracks from his The Man Who Sold The World era, is due for release on May 28th via Parlophone.

The new release comes in continued celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Man Who Sold The World, Bowie’s landmark entry into the 1970s. Last year, Bowie’s estate re-released the album under its original name, Metrobolist (so the story goes, the label changed the album’s name without Bowie’s permission ahead of its initial release). The re-release also featured a new mix by the album’s original producer, Tony Visconti.

Borrowing heavily from Marc Bolan’s glam rock and the future shock of A Clockwork Orange, David Bowie reached back to the heavy rock of The Man Who Sold the World for The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Constructed as a loose concept album about an androgynous alien rock star named Ziggy Stardust, the story falls apart quickly, yet Bowie’s fractured, paranoid lyrics are evocative of a decadent, decaying future, and the music echoes an apocalyptic, nuclear dread. Fleshing out the off-kilter metallic mix with fatter guitars, genuine pop songs, string sections, keyboards, and a cinematic flourish, Ziggy Stardust is a glitzy array of riffs, hooks, melodrama, and style and the logical culmination of glam. Mick Ronson plays with a maverick flair that invigorates rockers like “Suffragette City,” “Moonage Daydream,” and “Hang Onto Yourself,” while “Lady Stardust,” “Five Years,” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” have a grand sense of staged drama previously unheard of in rock & roll. And that self-conscious sense of theater is part of the reason why Ziggy Stardust sounds so foreign. Bowie succeeds not in spite of his pretensions but because of them, and Ziggy Stardust — familiar in structure, but alien in performance — is the first time his vision and execution met in such a grand, sweeping fashion. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Man Who Sold the World is the third studio album by English musician David Bowie. It was originally released by Mercury Records in the United States on 4 November 1970 and in the United Kingdom on 10 April 1971. The album was produced by Tony Visconti and recorded at Trident and Advision Studios in London during April and May 1970. It features the first appearances of guitarist Mick Ronson and drummer Mick Woodmansey on a Bowie record, who would later become famous as members of the Spiders from Mars.

Following the largely acoustic and folk rock sound of Bowie’s previous 1969 self-titled album, The Man Who Sold the World marked a shift toward hard rock, with elements of blues rock. The lyrics are also darker than his previous releases, exploring themes of insanity, religion, technology and war. None of the songs from the album were released as official singles, although some tracks appeared as B-sides of singles between 1970 and 1973. Originally titled Metrobolist, a play on Fritz Lang’s 1927 film Metropolis, the title was changed at the last minute by Mercury without Bowie’s consultation.

The album was released with different cover artwork in the US and the UK. For the US release, the artwork was a cartoon-like drawing of a cowboy in front of an asylum. It was drawn by Michael J. Weller and based on an image of actor John Wayne. Bowie was unenthusiastic about the cover, so he enlisted Keith MacMillan to shoot an alternate cover. The final image, featuring Bowie wearing a blue dress designed by fashion designer Michael Fish, was used as the cover for the UK release. The Man Who Sold the World was reissued by RCA Records in 1972, featuring a black-and-white picture of Bowie’s then-current character Ziggy Stardust on the sleeve, but reissues since 1990 have revived the original UK artwork.

The Man Who Sold the World was originally better received by music critics in the US than in the UK. Nevertheless, it was a commercial failure in both countries; however, the 1972 reissue managed to chart in both the US and the UK. Retrospectively, the album has been praised by critics for the band’s performance and the unsettling nature of its music and lyrics, being considered by many to be the start of Bowie’s “classic period”. It has since been reissued multiple times and was remixed in 2020, under its original title Metrobolist, for its 50th anniversary.

Station to Station is the 10th studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 23 January 1976 by RCA Records. Commonly regarded as one of his most significant works, Station to Station was the vehicle for his performance persona, the Thin White Duke. Co-produced by Bowie and Harry Maslin, the album was recorded at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles, California, in the latter half of 1975 after he completed shooting Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth; the cover artwork featured a still from the film. During the sessions, Bowie was heavily dependent on drugs, especially cocaine, and later claimed that he recalled almost nothing of the production.

The second of two inessential double live albums David Bowie released in the ’70s, 1978’s Stage is a different beast than its 1974 predecessor, David Live. That album captured Bowie in a transitional phase, sliding from glam to stylized soul, while Stage was recorded in the thick of his Berlin phase with producer/collaborator Brian Eno, and Stage is an attempt to translate that sleek, angular, arty studio-bound sound to the live arena. This means not only are Low and Heroes given live treatments, but about half of both Ziggy Stardust and Station to Station are given new arrangements here. On these older tunes, the new flair – the synthesizers and Adrian Belew’s tangled, mathematical guitar – doesn’t sound sleek, it sounds chintzy and cheap, not quite fully formed. The newer songs suffer from this, too, and that’s because the performances are too direct and the recording is too crisp and clear, removing the dark, foreboding mystery and assuredness that made Low and Heroes thrilling, compelling listens. Consequently, Stage winds up as a curiosity, and not a very interesting one at that.

50th anniversary edition of Bowie’s seminal album featuring a brand new mix by original producer Tony Visconti. Originally released 14th November 1969, the sophomore effort from Bowie was a big turning point from his 1967 debut. The album most famously introduces the character of Major Tom in Space Oddity which would go on to be one of his most enduring classics. The new mix of the album now features the title track of the boxset Conversation Piece restored to the track listing in its initially intended position before it was originally dropped due to time constraints of vinyl.

Originally released as part of the comprehensive 2018 box set Loving the Alien, Serious Moonlight (Live ’83) is an audio release of the 1984 home video release Serious Moonlight, which itself aired earlier on the cable network HBO. In any incarnation, Serious Moonlight captures Bowie at the peak of his coolly calculated superstardom, streamlining his eccentricities so they are slick yet still a bit strange. It ain’t rock & roll, it’s entertainment, but that’s also the charm of the record: it’s big and glitzy, with Bowie acting justifiably proud of his grandiose moves but also performing with a sly, knowing wink. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), also known simply as Scary Monsters,[a] is the 14th studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 12 September 1980 by RCA Records. Over the past three years, Bowie garnered massive artistic success with the “Berlin Trilogy”, which consisted of Low, “Heroes” and Lodger (1977–1979). However, the trilogy had proven less successful commercially. By 1980, numerous artists Bowie had inspired with the trilogy were out-performing him commercially, leading him to desire a more commercial sound for his next record.

Newly remastered of the 1987 album. The seeds of this new reimagining of the albums were first sown in 2008 when David asked Mario McNulty to remix the track ‘Time Will Crawl’ and record new drums by longtime Bowie drummer, Sterling Campbell along with strings. The track was issued on the iSelect compilation to much acclaim, and in the notes, for that record, David remarked ‘Oh, to redo the rest of that album’.

Fast-forward to early 2018 McNulty entered Electric Lady Studios in New York with Sterling, Tim Lefebvre on bass, who was in the ★ (“Blackstar”) band and Reeves Gabrels and David Torn on guitars. All of the musicians had a history with David, so were a perfect fit for what now sound like brand new songs. Nico Muhly, whom Mario first met when they were both interns working for Philip Glass in 2001, has handled the string arrangements.
