Award-winning saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia has announced her latest project, a fully reimagined remix album titled Source ⧺ We Move. The project restructures and repurposes works from the musician’s debut solo album Source, which arrived in 2020.
Source ⧺ We Move will be released via Concord Records on October 22. The album will feature remixes from Georgia Anne Muldrow, KeiyaA, Moses Boyd, and more. Alongside the announcement, Garcia has shared the Kaidi Tatham remix of “La Cumbia Me Está Llamando” featuring La Perla.
Tatham is credited as an innovator in the movement of Broken Beat, a sound utilized in this remix that is defined by its soulful, syncopated beats.

Although this release is Nubya Garcia’s first real solo album, the artist is accustomed to being showered with praise, awards, prizes, projects and collaborations. At 29 years old, the Londoner is undoubtedly one of the major players on the new British jazz scene and her colourful, full-bodied saxophone playing has already resonated on numerous recordings such as those of the groups Nérija and Maisha, and on two thirds of We Out Here (2018), the iconic compilation album from Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label which united the big names on the contemporary scene. It is with some of these musicians that she has recorded Source. Joined by Joe Armon-Jones (keys), Daniel Casimir (bass) and Sam Jones (drums), Garcia was certainly well-equipped to push the boundaries of contemporary jazz and the UK music scene. As is often the case with contemporary UK musicians, Afro-Caribbean and urban sounds come to influence the rhythms as well as the melodies. Such a fusion is often present in UK jazz albums which also have their own unique flavours. The influence of Herbie Hancock (from the Headhunters period/early Columbia Records) is never far away (Inner Game, The Message Continues). This sensation is amplified by the funky playing of the organ and synth magician, Joe Armon-Jones.

Once upon a time, for a few years at the dawn of the 21st century, Avenue C in New York City’s East Village had its own Zubin Mehta, its own Herbert Von Karajan, its own Daniel Barenboim. He was a veteran of both the Vietnam War and, even more heroically, NYC’s avant-garde jazz scene. His name was Lawrence “Butch” Morris and he was a well-established legend. The orchestra he conducted and the repertoire they played differed considerably from those employed by the above-named gentlemen in style, substance, tools and content. It was a motley crew of musicians from a wide array of backgrounds, styles, disciplines and genres, and the music he drew out of them, far from a set-in-stone catalog of well-established pieces from the European classical tradition, was informed by jazz improvisation, feeding off of the electricity of the streets around them and spontaneously creating the sound of NOW, on the fly and out of thin air, brought to life by each exacting stroke of Butch’s baton. Each performance was a unique moment never to be repeated and there were no “hits” you were guaranteed to hear. But the recordings of these performances are revelatory and give a strong sense of something strange, new, mysterious and wonderful about to happen, or that’s happening already, and these are the recordings, made all around the world, that Nublu Records is now presenting to you.

Chinese pianist Niu Niu has announced he will release his new album Fate & Hope on 7 May 2021. The recording features Liszt’s extraordinary solo piano transcription of Beethoven’s epic Fifth Symphony, digitally released today, Beethoven’s ‘Pathétique’ and ‘Moonlight’ sonatas and Niu Niu’s debut composition Hope.
“The theme of my album is fate and hope,” explained Niu Niu. “Obviously Hope is the title of my debut composition that I have placed at the end of this album but in the symphony alone, playing through the four movements, I also felt that progress of fate and ending with hope. It’s about finally arriving somewhere that you feel satisfied, fulfilled and relieved. I think this symphony gives us a lot of soothing in our hearts – and, actually, Beethoven’s music overall is really what we need during this time.”

Stravinsky suffered from the First World War and its consequences for Europe; Bartok spoke out before and during the Second World War against the nationalist mood in twentieth-century Europe; Bartok’s friend and colleague, the Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti, to whom he dedicated his Contrasts trio, had to flee Hungary for the USA in 1939 on account of the dangerous antisemitic climate in the country. Mordechai Zeira and Yaakov Orland suffered from the violence and antisemitic attacks in Imperial Russia at the start of the 20th century; they had to emigrate and found a new homeland in what is now Israel. The German composer J”org Widmann addresses the political question: “Do the Muses have the right to remain silent when the weapons speak?”. And finally there is the “Poema” trio by Roglit Ishay. It is dedicated to the people of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon (France), who risked their lives to save strangers from their Nazi persecutors. Music in spite of all – that is the principle common to our whole musical program.
