The National Brass Ensemble (NBE) and conductor Eun Sun Kim present Deified, an album containing music by Wagner and Strauss, as well as world premiere recordings of pieces by Jonathan Bingham and Arturo Sandoval. Bingham won the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and San Francisco Symphony’s Emerging Black Composers Project competition with his cinematic composition Deified, while composer/trumpet player Sandoval is a legend in the brass world. The longest piece on this album is Timothy Higgins’s The Ring, a virtuosic recomposition of Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen scored for brass ensemble. Together, these pieces showcase the exceptional coloristic and expressive range of brass music. Consisting of some of the best players from leading U.S. orchestras, the National Brass Ensemble is one of the greatest brass groups of our time. Eun Sun Kim is Caroline H. Hume Music Director of the San Francisco Opera, and frequents the most important opera houses and concert halls of the world. The NBE and Kim both make their Pentatone debut.

“I’m always searching,” says the Korean-American blues poet Nat Myers. “Itinerancy is something that I’ve owned. I’ve done a lot of traveling, but lately it’s started to seep into my songwriting and my music. Life just feels simpler on the road. You’re just trying to get to the next place in one piece.” His debut album, Yellow Peril, is full of jumpy blues songs about hopping trains, burning up highways, running from some danger but also running toward something harder to define and even harder to catch. Full of intelligence and soul, contradiction and nuance, these songs reflect his restlessness and wanderlust in their fleet riffs, complex rhythms, and quick tempos, as he draws from a variety of stylistic strains and historical threads to weave a complex epic about life in post-pandemic America.

Myers’ story starts in Kansas, but quickly moves to West Tennessee and then Northern Kentucky. Even as a child, he was a restless spirit: “I had a rowdy little childhood. My parents signed me up against my will to play in the school band, but I hated it. I pulled a Who on my trumpet and just destroyed it.” Instead, he spent his days skateboarding and listening to pop-punk and hardcore. “My mom got me a left-handed starter guitar, just trying to keep me away from the riffraff I was hanging out with. I kept hanging out with them, but now I had a guitar.” Even as he developed a deft picking style, Myers didn’t harbor great ambitions to be a musician. His true passion was poetry, especially the classics all high schoolers read but most quickly forget: Shakespeare and Homer, but especially The Odyssey, that epic of endless wandering. “I love the exercise of putting pen to paper. It’s the same way I feel about putting a needle down on vinyl. Magical things can happen.”

Ultra-catchy tracks like ‘Do It Faster’ and ‘Very High’ look at his challenging upbringing with adult perspective, while ‘Never Fucked Up Once,’ demonstrates a willingness to approach the third rail, juxtaposing some of ‘Life Under the Gun”s most darkly comedic lyrics with its most overt pop-rock sensibilities. The album closes with its anthemic title track where Shelton sings the final refrain ‘a life of pursuit ends up pursuing you’ like an urgent reminder to himself: move forward or get swallowed up-your past might shape you, but it doesn’t have to define you. The song’s final lone chord rings out like a question, a fittingly hopeful-yet-ambiguous ending for the debut album from a band that’s already come so far and evolved so much-but whose story has only just begun.

Mike Shinoda has unveiled a new version of his 2018 solo album Post Traumatic. Originally released five years ago on June 15 – and written after the tragic loss of his bandmate Chester Bennington in 2017 – the Linkin Park man is celebrating the anniversary of his excellent debut solo LP with a remastered version, along with a video for Hold It Together.

“It’s been 5 years since the release of Post Traumatic,” he says. “This album was one of the toughest and most cathartic and rewarding projects I’ve undertaken.

“In celebration, I will be releasing a new remastered version of the album on all streaming platforms (out tonight). We also made a video for Hold It Together, (out tomorrow) which was the only track from the album that didn’t get a visual.

“I am so grateful to have been able to share these songs and perform them for you. Thank you, as always, for your support.”

Upon Post Traumatic’s original release in 2018, we said in our review that it was “more than an album for Chester. It’s Mike showing off his superb songwriting talents, taking what he’d started with his alternative side-project Fort Minor into new territories. Given the turmoil this record was created in, that’s an impressive feat.
