Fired by his ongoing battle with mental illness, Shortly After Takeoff is the final, and finest, chapter of what Christinzio calls his “Manchester Trilogy”, following 2015’s How To Die In The North and 2018’s Deportation Blues. All three albums were created after the native Philadelphian had moved to Manchester. Like Deportation Blues, Shortly After Takeoff spans singer-songwriter classicism, gnarly synth-pop and ‘50s rock’n’roll, with Christinzio’s similarly distinctive, flexible vocal carrying a fearless approach to lyrical introspection, but the new album is a major leap forward in songwriting sophistication and lyrical communication.

Sergei Rachmaninov was one of the twentieth century’s outstanding pianists, but the large body of purely orchestral music he composed is no less an expression of his musical character. His great strength was that he managed to preserve intact a vision he had discovered very early in life. This contemporary of Schönberg, Scriabin, Ravel and Ives was unconcerned with musical fashions and had no wish to be a pioneer. Instead, and over a period of half a century he refined and deepened a language which derived naturally from his late-nineteenth-century Russian background.

The Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and the Orchestre Symphonique Bienne Soleure have worked together for several years on producing concerts founded on the concept of apprenticeship, offering renowned artists and promising young musicians the possibility of a residency at the Music Chapel. This collaboration has given rise to the ambitious idea of programming Mozart’s double concertos, with the original feature of partnering a confirmed artist – such as Frank Braley or Louis Lortie – with an emerging talent. The conductor Kaspar Zender and the Orchestre Symphonique Bienne Soleure gave their full commitment to this project, which combines the wisdom of experience and youthful ardour, centring on a concert. It was therefore decided to give priority to the experience of live performance in order to preserve the emotion of the artists and the palpable fervour of the audience.
