DeepMatter Records are proud to present the fourth instalment of Myele Manzanza’s ‘Crisis & Opportunity’ series; Vol.4 ‘Meditations’.

Works attributable with certainty to Nicolò Corradini (1585–1646) – likely from Cremona as opposed to Bergamo or Rome as erroneously suggested in the past – are limited to a few printed editions, among them the Primo libro de Canzoni francesi a 4 e alcune suonate (a copy of which has come down to us, printed by Gardano in Venice in 1624). It includes ten French canzonas and four sonatas, works most likely conceived to be performed by several instrumentalists, including one or more possible continuists (because of the speed of some passages and the separation between different parts of often more than an octave).

The second of back-to-back solo albums cut in the early ’80s, The Brightest Smile in Town presents a more balanced mix of vocal and instrumental tracks than its predecessor, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack. While it’s fun to hear the great New Orleans pianist romp through “Box Car Boogie” and patiently work his way through the twilight blues of “Pretty Libby,” the unexpected treats are the best: a heartsick version of Jimmy Rodgers’s “Waiting for a Train;” a Doc Pomus cover, “Average Kind of Guy,” that sounds like Randy Newman on a particularly good day; and “Marie La Veau,” a highly syncopated bow to one of the Crescent City’s many voodoo queens. By the time Rebennack ends Brightest Smile with two gorgeous instrumentals–a lovely take on Harold Arlen’s “Come Rain or Come Shine” and “Suite Home New Orleans”–you’re reminded just how encyclopedic his knowledge of American music is.

An essential force in the West Coast Jazz scene of the ’50s and ’60s, drummer/bandleader Chico Hamilton possessed a subtle yet immensely creative style that would come to define the cool jazz movement. After getting his start drumming for the likes of Charles Mingus while still in high school in Los Angeles (Hamilton’s hometown and the epicenter of cool jazz), he went on to work with legends like Count Basie, tour as Lena Horne’s drummer, and become a charter member of baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan’s highly influential quartet. In a rare move for a drummer in the ’50s, Hamilton founded his own quintet in 1955 and instantly achieved major success, with the Chico Hamilton Quintet quickly emerging as one of the most popular jazz groups of the time — and later gaining recognition as one of the last important West Coast Jazz bands in music history. Before disbanding in the mid-’60s, the quintet cycled through several line-ups (with one version featuring Eric Dolphy) and explored such eclectic styles as chamber jazz and advanced hard-bop, in addition to appearing in films like Jazz on a Summer’s Day (a concert film set at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival).
