Something new by Haydn? Well, yes and no… None of the works presented on this album has ever been heard in this form in our time. Michael D”ucker, director and spiritus rector of nuovo aspetto, has gone in libraries and archives in search of Haydn works that are ideally suited for the chamber music-apart instrumentation of the ensemble nuovo aspetto. Michael D”ucker has carefully re-edited the originals and adapted them to today’s musical requirements. The result is a fascinating project with amazingly contemporary-sounding chamber music versions of various Haydn works.

The well-known Symphony in C major Hob.I:61, for example, is performed here in an arrangement by the contemporary harpist Pater Meingosius Gaelle from Salzburg. Haydn originally wrote the symphony as incidental music for the comedy “Le Distrait”, which was first performed at the Esterh’azy court as “The Distracted” in 1774. Haydn’s “Le Distrait” represents an almost unbroken chain of musical slapsticks with which Haydn alludes to the plot of the comedy – right up to the rapid sweep to the “Le Distrait” piece: the violins have obviously forgotten to tune their instruments and still have to make up for this procedure in the middle of the piece! This musical comedy still works wonderfully after almost 250 years – smiles and laughs guaranteed!
