He may be remembered as one of the ‘Mighty Handful’ of Russian composers, but Alexander Borodin was a surgeon and chemist by profession. Having spent time in a military hospital, made significant contributions to the discipline of chemistry, and founded the Saint Petersburg School of Medicine for Women, Borodin was a busy and influential figure in the scientific community of the day. You could assume that he would enjoy nothing more taxing than a nice walk or good book in his downtime, but he was busy crafting some of the most recognisable melodies of the period, including the Nocturne from his second string quartet, the Overture and Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor, and In the Steppes of Central Asia, all of which feature on this excellent compilation of some of his most important works.
