In These Times is a collection of polytemporal compositions inspired as much by broader cultural struggles as McCraven’s personal experience as a product of a multinational, working class musician community. With contributions from over a dozen musicians and creative partners from his tight-knit circle of collaborators – including Jeff Parker, Junius Paul, Brandee Younger, Joel Ross, and Marquis Hill – the music was recorded in five different studios and four live performance spaces while McCraven engaged in extensive post-production work at home. Featuring orchestral, large ensemble arrangements interwoven with the signature “organic beat music” sound that’s become his signature, the album is an evolution and a milestone for McCraven, the producer. But moreover, it’s the strongest and clearest statement we’ve yet to hear from McCraven, the composer.

Makaya McCraven live, in 24bit Hi-Res, only on Qobuz! This world exclusive took place the night of September 19, 2022, when McCraven and his friends took the stage at Public Records in Brooklyn to play a few tracks from the album In These Times, which was to be released four days later. Surrounded by Junius Paul on bass, Brandee Younger on harp, De’Sean Jones on tenor sax and flute, Zara Zararieva and Macie Stewart on violins, Marta Sofia Honer on viola, and Lia Kohl on cello, the Chicago drummer reminds us that the stage is truly at the heart of his music. The stage, of course, but also post-production. The ambitious In These Times brings together these two hemispheres of his brain. On this recording, however, there is no collage, no fiddling— just a group of jazz musicians playing four tracks from the album: “Dream Another,” “The Knew Untitled,” “This Place That Place” and “Lullaby,” The latter is a theme based on a song by Kolinda, of which his mother (the Hungarian singer and flautist Àgnes Zsigmondi) was formerly a member. Makaya’s writing has developed wonderfully over the last few years, and the beauty of the compositions are what first catches the ear. His rhythmic vision is enriched by the elegance of his songs, mixing lyricism and spirituality. This intimate live recording is a reminder that large ensembles—eight musicians are on stage here—are the most appropriate vehicle for his ideas. Throughout International Anthem @ Public Records (Volume 3) there is a genuine feeling of joy in the playing: tight collaboration, hefty momentum and an insane variety over these four tracks. A special event. – Marc Zisman
