L’arte del mondo – Goethe & Kayser: Scherz, List und Rache (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Goethe as an opera librettist: in November 2019, an opera sensation was to be experienced at the Leverkusener Erholungshaus: 232 years after its creation, a comic opera was premiered with “Scherz, List und Rache”, to which none other than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had written the Libretto. The music was composed by Goethe’s childhood friend Philipp Christoph Kayser (1755-1823). Inspired by the Italian Buffo opera, Goethe and Kayser wanted to create a new kind of German opera with “Scherz, List und Rache”. The result was a turbulent three-person play about a young married couple who have been betrayed by an old money-hungry doctor for their inheritance.

In 2019 it was conductor Werner Ehrhardt and his Ensemble l’arte del mondo who performed this opera rarity for the first time in its original instrumentation for large orchestra. Annika Boos, Cornel Frey and Florian Götz took over the vocal parts, which were peppered with virtuoso passages. The world premiere recording, in co-production with WDR and Bayer Kultur, of this Singspiel can now also be experienced in this cast.

The origin of “jest, cunning and revenge” dates back to 1784. Goethe’s Ideal of a new form of opera was the so-called “Italian Intermezzo”. It should be entertaining, small staffed and thus easy and cost-effective to realize everywhere. Goethe wanted to bring the peculiarities of the Italian Intermezzo, which is based entirely on the Commedia dell’arte, into new forms of content: for example, the playing out of the contrasts between clever and stupid, old and young, poor and rich. The entertaining comedy of the Italian Commedia dell’arte should be preserved.
