Following 2007’s Diasporas and 2009’s Diachronism, Beirut-born trumpeter and composer Ibrahim Maalouf rounds off his musical trilogy with his most personal effort to date, Diagnostic. Featuring 11 original compositions all inspired by his family, the winner of Discovery of the Year at the 2010 French Jazz Music Awards showcases his piano skills for the first time on another intriguing blend of Balkan brass, Latin jazz, funk-soul, classical, and heavy metal, which also features a collaboration with French rapper Oxmo Puccino (“Douce”). ~ Jon O’Brien
