Who is this young woman who watches with a resigned eye her companion dancing with her latest conquest ? Who is this young woman thrown to the ground by her fickle companion ? Who is this scorned young woman who sings a poignant blues to ward off her misfortune ?

Eleanora Harris Fagan, known as Billie Holiday (1915-1959), first appeared on screen in Duke Ellington’s Symphony in Black (1935).

Her sad situation seems to herald the sad fate of Billie Holiday (1915-1959), that of a musician condemned to pay an extraordinary donation for singing by a life obscured from end to end by misery, prostitution, racism, alcohol and drugs that will eventually burn her wings.
