Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana remains one of the most popular and most recorded of all classical works; this 1967 version was made in Berlin in the presence of Orff himself, who authorized the recording. Over the years many critics have singled out this album as one of the greatest interpretations ever released, with lavish praise for conductor Eugen Jochum and all the musicians and soloists.

“Although there are many good modern alternatives, the classic account that triumphantly stands the test of time was recorded in the presence of the composer …”
– Classic FM

“This recording is highly distinguished … soprano Gundula Janowitz finds a quiet dignity for her contribution and this is finely done. The chorus are best when the music blazes … the closing scene is moulded by Jochum with a wonderful control …”
– The Penguin Guide to Classical Recorded Music

“Since its original release, Jochum’s performance has consistently been a prime recommendation for this much-recorded piece. Listening to it again in the superbly remastered sound, one can easily hear why … this distinguished performance, authorized by the composer and now sounding better than ever, easily retains its place at the head of the queue.”
– Gramophone
