Dorothee Oberlinger presents “Pastorale”, a colourful Italian Christmas album – supported by soprano Dorothee Mields, the Li Piffari e le Muse, her ensemble 1700 and the actor Matthias Brandt as narrator of special Italian Christmas stories. The album will be released on November 4th by Deutsche harmonia mundi / Sony Music.

It was the shepherds who first learned about the birth of the Savior. In the Italian cities, this story lives on in Christmas customs to this day. Already in the Baroque period, composers such as Corelli, Marcello, Handel, Vivaldi or Guido were inspired by the pastoral sounds of the piffari, who came down from the mountains to the cities of Rome or Naples on Christmas and played on their traditional instruments such as the bagpipe, the hurdy-gurdy, the piffero, the flute and the fiddle.

In her Christmas album “Pastorale”, which will be released on November 4th by deutsche harmonia mundi, Dorothee Oberlinger combines works by Arcangelo Corelli, Alessandro Scarlatti, Giovanni Guido, Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Friedrich Händel and Johann Christoph Pez with the traditional ways of the Piffari to create a lavishly colorful musical picture book of Italian Christmas. The musical painting is prominently illustrated by the Baroque soprano Dorothee Mields, Oberlinger’s Ensemble 1700 and the Italian pipers of “Li Piffari e le Muse”.

The well-known actor and author Matthias Brandt can be heard on the album as a speaker of special Italian lyrics, including “The Christmas Night” from the “Italian Picture Book” by the writer Fanny Lewald, who is friends with Heine and Liszt, lyrics of famous Italian Christmas carols, including “Tu scendi dalle stelle” as well as Christmas childhood memories of Fellini producer Turi Vasile.
