At the gates of jazz, Belgium has again struck … One of the main qualities of this wonderful little country is that the Belgian people have been able to draw and mix the best Anglo-Saxon and Latin cultures. As for vocal jazz and the art of composition, Chrystel Wautier is again the incarnation. With “The Stolen Book”, to be released on October 6, Chrystel Wautier delivers a magical, intimate and introspective album. A celestial voice that is already a favorite of André Manoukian, who says: “We get the impression that she sings in our ear, her phrasing is clear, she plays naive painting, restraint. With this daughter of pastor, the last born of the lineage of warriors of peace, and who comes from Belgium, life is simple and cheerful giving us glimpses of serenity. A little girl of Ukrainian immigrants, Chrystel Wautier was born in the Hainaut region of Belgium. His father, pastor and musician, introduced him to the “Gospel”. She began her career at the age of seven, learning basic music theory and playing the classical piano, then pursuing a jazz and variety piano formation. It was in the year 2000 that Chrystel decided to devote himself fully to singing. “The Stolen Book” is the result of a questioning that inhabits all children or grandchildren of immigrant origin: where do I come from? Notwithstanding his Ukrainian origins, it had never occurred to him to go on his ancestral lands until the day he was asked to sing for the 25 years of Ukraine’s independence, opera of Lviv. A journey that will turn out to be overwhelming and the trigger for a long job, of which “The Stolen Book” is the culmination. On his return from Ukraine, Chrystel Wautier accidentally heard on the radio a writer talking about this funny phenomenon: the thieves of books in bookstores. Would people not have enough access to culture? Or would they no longer recognize the value of the work of artists? “The Stolen Book,” this stolen book, became another question so stubborn that she decided to make it a song that is also the title of the album. “The Stolen Book” actually tells his own stolen, hidden book, the weight of an immigration which, too heavy and traumatic to be able to speak, is today sung by Chrystel Wautier.
