One, Johann Joseph Fux, is primarily known as a music theorist, the other, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, as the author of the popular “Stabat Mater”. Both can be experienced from a completely different angle on this album with the Ensemble Zeronove under the direction of Lukas Wanner.
The Swiss ensembles Zeronove and I Pizzicanti have made it their mission to bring unknown music back to life. This is wonderfully demonstrated here with two marvellous works by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Johann Joseph Fux.
Fux was not only the famous counterpoint teacher of the 18th century (from whom Mozart also benefited), as a court musician in Vienna he also wrote this Requiem, for example, which was composed in 1720 for the funeral of the Empress Dowager Eleonore Magdalene and was still used for many a funeral service at the Habsburg court afterwards.
Pergolesi’s mass was probably composed 10 years later, around 1730. This extensive sacred work is also a discovery and shows a completely different side of the “Stabat Mater” composer.

Laurence Juber – A Day In My Life (2024)

In the twenty-plus years since it was first suggested that Laurence Juber should record a set of Beatles tunes, he’s released four albums in the ‘LJ Plays the Beatles’ series. This new album came out of a fresh opportunity to record at the famed Abbey Road Studios, in the very same studio the Beatles recorded so many years before – Studio 2. It was also in this very studio where LJ was recording in 1978 when he got the call to audion for Wings. He proceeded to work with Paul and Linda at the Abbey Road Studio, which became a second home during sessions for the ‘Back to the Egg’ album. That was the last time he had been there, until now.
The digital and special vinyl release of “A Day In My Life” will coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Beatle’s debut on Ed Sullivan’s show on February 9th, 2024 and LJ will be a featured guest at The Beatlefest in New York at the TWA hotel at JFK that weekend.

Knut Kongsvold (b. 1989) is a norwegian jazzpianist/composer. For the moment he lives in Bergen where he studies jazz at The Grieg Academy. He has played on different festivals and clubs around in Norway.
In 2012 he was granted Dølajazz Lillehammer Jazzfestival’s talent prize, which gives him the oppurtunity to play a concert with one of the jazzgreats in norway on this years festival.

Sometimes it’s extremely tender here, sometimes it’s also grippingly groovy – plucked, stroked, stroked and knocked – everything seems possible in this “one-bass show”. The album “Henning Sieverts: Bassolo” was created in the fantastic acoustics of the Munich Resurrection Church.
All the pieces of the recording are summarized in a music booklet “Henning Sieverts: Bassolo”, in two versions each: plucked and deleted, with and without improv parts.

This project is the result of a meeting with the violinist Johan Renard during concerts organized in tribute to my brother Didier Lockwood, but also a nod to the group Surya set up in 1979 by my late brother and the drummer Jean My Truong where in the group successively at the time were bassists Josquin Turenne Des Prés, Bunny Brunel and Sylvin Marc. I played keyboards there with Luc Pluton and of course Didier Lockwood on violin and Jean My Truong on drums. From there came the idea of forming this quartet because Johan Renard is in line with the energy that Didier could give to music. It happened naturally! It was almost chance that set up this project, as if it were obvious! But as they say ”chance does not exist”… In the company of Frédéric Sicart on drums, William Brunard on double bass and Henri Dorina for the electric bass parts, we wanted to explore the new paths of so-called ‘Jazz’ music while remaining in acoustic instruments but giving a more current impulse. It is also a certain way of continuing in all modesty the legacy left by my brother Didier because Johan has well integrated his teaching and spirit. Of course the goal here is not to reproduce the sound of the Surya group but rather to let its musical energy shine through in the hope of having succeeded. A great adventure in short. He was born in Istanbul in 1991. His mother is music teacher Füsun Yarkin, his father is Turkish music percussion artist Fahrettin Yarkin. He is the grandson of composer and tamburi Kamuran Yarkin. The second child of the family, Baturay Yarkin’s older sister is the classical kemençe artist Nağme Yarkin.
Baturay Yarkin entered the part-time Piano Department of Istanbul University State Conservatory with the first place in 1998 when he was 6 years old. He studied piano with Meral Yapali, Nihan Yapali and Aygül Günaltay Şahinalp, solfege and harmony with Ercan Keseroğlu and Hakan Abit, and deciphering with Sibel Atal Devrim. at the age of 13, when he was a conservatory student, he participated in the “Interfest International Pianists Competition” held in Manastir, Macedonia, and became the European third in the Junior category.[1] he completed 12 years of part-time conservatory education with a bachelor’s degree in 2010.[1] at the age of 16, he accompanied the Yarkin Turkish Rhythm Band, founded by his father Fahrettin Yarkin and his uncle, rhythm artist Ferruh Yarkin, at domestic and international concerts

Andrew Appel, Artistic Director of the Four Nations Ensemble, performs throughout Europe and the United States as soloist in many festivals including Italy’s Spoleto Festival, New York’s Mostly Mozart Festival, and the Redwoods Festival. In 2023 Appel was invited to join the performers at Music from Marlboro. As recitalist, Mr. Appel has performed at Carnegie and Avery Fisher Halls in New York, as well as halls from the Music Academy of the West to the Smithsonian in Washington DC. Along with his focus on The Four Nations Ensemble, he has been a guest artist of Chatham Baroque, the Smithsonian Players, and Orpheus. He serves as harpsichordist for opera companies and has toured with several European chamber orchestras. He has enjoyed critical acclaim for his solo recording of Bach works with Bridge Records as well as his fortepiano performances of Haydn for ASV. He and the Four Nations Ensemble presently record for Orchid Classical in London.
