One of Charlie Barent’s later efforts, CHEROKEE proved to be more than fortuitous for this enigmatic musician. Spurning conventional wisdom, he released this set of vintage big band tunes when rock & roll was the rage, and big-band jazz had long since metamorphosed into bebop, cool, and even newer, more avant-garde styles. Barnet’s 1958 band, composed of jazz greats such as trumpeter Clark Terry and pianist Nat Pierce, showed a previously apathetic audience that big band music was not only still viable, but exciting. Heavily influenced by the Basie and Ellington orchestras, Barnet successfully leads a tight, hard-swinging ensemble on this date. Songs such as “East Side, West Side,” “Blue Juice,” and the title track, prove this band’s ability to match the legendary orchestras from the Golden Era of swing. Arguably Barnet’s strongest effort, CHEROKEE is an exhilarating album.

Just six months after the release of her third studio album, Charli, Charli XCX found herself confined in her home in Los Angeles. The hyperactive English songwriter quickly set herself the challenge of writing an album from scratch in just six weeks and, most importantly, she made the project an interactive experience with her fans. While she was guided by industry titans such as A.G. Cook, (founder of the label PC Music) and BJ Burton (producer for Bon Iver and Miley Cyrus), everyone was invited to take part in the project. Some people sent her snippets of music while others gave their opinion on the demos she played on Instagram or the lyrics she posted on Twitter. She also organised Zoom conferences with hundreds of participants. The result is a pretty solid album by Charli XCX that remains faithful to the futuristic electronic pop sound that made her famous, with potential hit songs like the autotuned ballad Forever, the more dance-y Claws, as well as the lovely hybrid electro-pop song, I Finally Understand. With 36 number one hits under his belt, Charley Pride, who is black, has helped prove how little race matters to the majority of country music fans. It’s taken a long time to understand that, though. His first single, “Snakes Crawl at Night,” was released without publicity photos, as some in the industry feared listeners would automatically reject a black country singer. Since then, Pride’s 12 gold albums in the United States, combined with 30 gold and four platinum internationally, place him in the Top 15 all-time country record sellers. His easygoing singing style and easy-to-listen-to voice show why these honors have come his way. From picking cotton in his native Mississippi, Pride ended up working in a smelting plant in Montana after a stint as a semipro baseball player. At the suggestion of Red Sovine, Pride moved to Nashville, where he was signed by Chet Atkins of RCA. In 1966, “Just Between You and Me” brought Pride a Grammy nomination and national fame. At the end of the ’60s and the early part of the ’70s, he had five number one singles in a row, including “All I Have to Offer Is Me” and “(Is Anybody Going To) San Antone.” Numerous awards came in 1971 and 1972, with many more hits following, among them “She’s Too Good to Be True,” “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” and “Night Games.” Pride’s warm baritone voice and relaxed style made him the highest-selling act for RCA since Elvis Presley.

Growing up with a single mother in San Benito, Texas, the hometown of Tejano star Freddy Fender was not easy for blues singer Charley Crockett. Hitchhiking across the country exposed Crockett to the street life at a young age, following in the footsteps of his relative, American folk hero Davy Crockett, who lived a wild life on the American frontier. After train hopping across the country, Crockett set off to travel the world and lived on the streets of Paris for nearly a year before searching for home in Spain, Morocco, and Northern Africa.Charley returned home to Texas and released his debut solo album titled A Stolen Jewel in 2015, receiving critical acclaim and landing him a Dallas Observer Award that year for “Best Blues Act”. He released his sophomore record In The Night in 2016 and played over 125 shows that year. Crockett’s song “I Am Not Afraid” received international recognition from top tastemakers after being picked by NPR Music as one of the “Top 10 Songs Public Radio Can’t Stop Playing” and featured on World Cafe. Now in 2018, Crockett releases Lonesome As A Shadow, an album recorded in Memphis at the legendary Sam Phillip’s Recording Service with producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang. Backed by the Blue Drifters, this album was recorded live to tape during a long year of touring. It’s a musical gumbo that showcases the various depths of Crockett’s sound.

Following his landmark recording of Giles Swayne’s Stations of the Cross (RES10118), organist Simon Niemiński returns to the Resonus label with an engaging recital of organ works by Charles Villiers Stanford (see volume 1, Tom Winpenny, RES10104).
Showcasing another of Edinburgh’s rich and varied crop of instruments, Niemiński performs on the unspoilt 1913 Brindley and Foster organ of Freemasons’ Hall, right in the heart of the city. Recently given a full restoration in 2009 by Forth Pipe Organs, this organ is almost unique as a complete, unaltered example of this significant and pioneering organ builder, and provides an ideal vehicle for authentic performances of this music.
Included in this enjoyable programme is Stanford’s first organ sonata, as well as the triumphant Marcia Eroica, Op. 189, and two world premieres in The Angelus, Op. 194, No.3 and his beautifully simple early Prelude on the ancient melody ‘Jesu dulcis memoriae’.

American baritone saxophone player Charles Tyler cut his teeth with free jazz legends Ornette Coleman and Sunny Murray and enjoyed a career as a sideman with Steve Reid, Cecil Taylor and Billy Bang through the 1970s. By 1982 he found himself touring with the infamous Sun Ra Orchestra, and as a result, relocated to Denmark. New York-based trumpeter, composer and educator Charles Tolliver presents Connect, his first studio album in 13 years.
Recorded to tape at RAK Studios last November by Tony Platt (Bob Marley, Jazz Jamaica All Stars, Abdullah Ibrahim), the line-up features top musicians from the New York jazz scene who have collectively played with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Nancy Wilson, and Chick Corea. Forming as the Charles Tolliver All Stars, the band includes Jesse Davis on alto saxophone, Keith Brown on piano, Buster Williams on double bass, and Lenny White on drums. The album also bridges together New York and London by featuring leading British saxophonist Binker Golding on two tracks, (Binker & Moses, Moses Boyd Exodus, Zara McFarlane.)
