As the name suggests, much of Vapor City, the second album from EDM whiz Travis Stewart’s Machinedrum project, is bathed in aural fog. But where 2011’s Room(s) messed with hyper, drum-machined-driven Chicago footwork, here the rhythms veer toward rolling drum and bass breaks, and the mood is a lot more relaxed. Drums underpin samples that loop and build and vary with purpose — see “Baby It’s U,” which Stewart distorts and smears into ever-more-lovelorn shapes. He makes them sound like songs, not just tracks — all the better to go with his own sung “U Still Lie,” a slushy goth/New Wave ballad for the ages.

John Frusciante – The Empyrean (2009) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44.1kHz]

After lying low for a few years after a tremendous burst of activity in 2004, John Frusciante is back with another solo album, Empyrean. It starts out with a fantastic instrumental called “Before the Beginning”: a great minor key guitar solo, replete with echoplexed drums that was surely inspired by “Maggot Brain.” After that, it’s back to the kind of introspective songs that have characterized much of his solo work. His singing is actually pretty remarkable considering his initial forays into vocals. He sounds confident and assured, even as the subject matter wrestles with dark thoughts and doubt. The songs tend to be fairly spare with guitar, electric piano, bass and drums with strings adding some lushness towards the end. Frusciante also uses the studio as an instrument à la Eno, adding cool treatments to nearly every song. Some of the songs are a bit mopey and the subject matter is often on the heavy end, but “Dark/Light” shifts gears nicely (dark to light?) where the heavy reverb and piano of “Dark” gives way to the cheesy rhythm box and falsetto vocals of “Light,” which leads into a nice bass-driven coda with choir. “Enough of Me” also features Johnny Marr on guitar, and one of them turns in a really nice Robert Fripp guitar solo. “One More of Me” is just strings and electric piano with Frusciante seemingly trying to sound like Stephin Merritt. Frusciante has done a nice job of carving an identity completely separate from his main gig, and Empyrean fits nicely with his other solo albums. ~ Sean Westergaard

Ghostly International presents the third full length entitled Psychic 9-5 club from Australian Outfit HTRK. With the group now consisting of just Nigel Yang and vocalist Jonnine Standish following the tragic death of former band member Sean Stewart, Psychic 9-5 favours a reflective, minimalistic palette over the grizzly edges of 2011 LP Work (Work, Work). Damped, dub tones launch ‘Give It Up’ which develops a deep emotional atmosphere with Standish’s weightless vocals whereas ‘Chinatown Style’ pushes the feeling further with sparse, considered electronic percussion. It is this reductionist ethos that gives Psychic 9-5 Club its raw power and undisputed sincerity.

Recorded: April 1989 at La Pieve di San Martino, Italy

Review from Diapason magazine #363 (abridged)
Reviewer: Denis Morrier

“Denis Morier underlines quite judiciously the importance of this recording of the “recarcadas” of Diego Ortiz. He writes: ” This is “… another revelation from Savall (as always in those ancient repertories that he explores with such an open mindedness,…); not only does it come from a famous musician and theorician…, but it stems from a buoyant and tumultuous art, full of exacerbated passions and tensions which are continuously revived.”

As we read on, he mentions that “Savall provides a broad selection from the various types of ricercadas located by Ortiz (only those based on Gregorian melodies are excluded), thus embellishing his choices with accompaniments of a wide variety, always splendidly performed. We can appreciate the volubility and the rhythmic exuberance which characterizes Ton Koopman’s performance – the hapsichordist often engaging in truly virtuoso exchanges with the soloist – as well as the inventiveness and delicacy of the harpist, Andre Lawrence-King. Being so well supported, Jordi Savall can let go all his poetical inspiration, without adornments, but giving to these pieces on the contrary a truly dramatic dimension… “.

Morier concludes his review by branding Savall as “the angel of the viola da gamba who performs… another miracle, giving a new dimension to these didactic pieces and puts them in a new perspective, shedding a new light on the Renaissance period.”
