On the occasion of the exhibition Celeste at Copenhagen Contemporary, the artists and musicians CTM (Cæcilie Trier) and August Rosenbaum present their new album of the same name with Posh Isolation. The exhibition is an immersive installation structured in acts that has been created with the artists Lea Guldditte Hestelund and Ea Verdoner. Trier and Rosenbaum’s songs and instrumental pieces can be found in the gallery as an element in a hybrid work of sculpture, video, and choreography that explores corporeality and transience. Their album ‘Celeste’ presents these recordings as a standalone work.

Except that the playing is nowhere near at the same level as the conducting and the recording is nowhere near at the same level as the playing, this disc of early recordings of the great Italian conductor Carlo Maria Giulini would be a success. And despite the orchestras’ extremely limited capacities, Giulini’s charismatic personality, intrinsic sense of drama, and sheer strength of will achieve much: his 1954 Schubert B minor Symphony is almost entirely convincing and his 1956 Brahms E minor nearly totally persuasive. But the Milan Radio Symphony’s scratchy strings and breathless winds do compromise the radiant lyricism of Giulini’s Schubert and the Rome Radio Symphony’s braying horns and keening flutes do wound the heroism of Giulini’s Brahms, and not even the conductor’s faith in the music and in his musicians can overcome the orchestras’ “every man for himself” approach to ensemble. And if the Italian radio playing wasn’t enough of an impairment, the live Italian radio sound is painfully antique with brief but agonizing bursts of static to remind the listener of its broadcast origins. East-European virtuosity and soul merges with the spirit of modern jazz. The amazing Hungarian violist-violinist Csaba Deseo was a member of the Budapest National Philharmonic (1967-99) and played with the likes of Menuhin and Rostropovich. His jazz credentials include work with John Lewis, and Jean-Luc Ponty. German Keyboardist Dieter Reith, famous for having co-composed music for the 1972 Olympics, played with Stan Getz, Toots Thielemans, etc. With its rich Eastern-oriented tapestry and tricky rhythms, Roof Dancer is a show-stopper. Für Kinder is a Bela Bartok melody that morphs into funk and fusion with Deseo digging in. Check out the tenor solo! On Makin’ Whoopee the band gets down to havin’ fun with this swinging medium-tempo delight. Rock Talk is just that, as Csaba stepping on the funky (wawa) pedal. Reith On takes a delightful excursion in ¾, while Something Blue is a gritty minor blues, and Closed is an introspective ballad.

When a record is presented to you as a progressive death metal mixture of the best parts of bands like Between the Buried and Me and Black Crown Initiate by It Djents’ resident music snob (I won’t say any names), it’s hard not to jump on it like a pack of hungry wolves jump a wounded moose. This was the case with Long Island, NY-based band Cryptodira’s album, The Devil’s Despair, and it wasn’t the only superlative being thrown around either.
So naturally, my first question was: ‘What is it about this record that made that particular person change their mind about what they previously believed to be a mediocre post-metal/prog-death hybrid?’ Well, it’s hard to pinpoint one big single reason; there are different elements at play that shape The Devil’s Despair into its impressive form, elements which I’d like to outline further while having a look at some of the album’s songs.

Crumb is the collaboration of Brooklyn-based musicians Lila Ramani (guitar, vocals), Brian Aronow (synth, keys, sax), Jesse Brotter (bass), and Jonathan Gilad (drums). The friends came together in 2016 with the goal of developing and recording a collection of songs Ramani had written in high school and college, the work ultimately resulting in the band’s first two EPs, 2016’s ‘Crumb’ and 2017’s ‘Locket’. Encouraged by the warm reception online and at shows, the band evolved into a full time touring and recording project.
