During the Swing Era the clarinet was king. Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Woody Herman led three of the most popular bands of the 30’s and 40’s, yet with the advent of bebop and small-group jazz, the saxophone commandeered the crown, and the clarinet found itself in exile. However, with the advent of the Avant-garde in the 1960’s, a new generation of clarinetists steeped in the tradition, yet yearning to explore the outer limits of the music and their instruments, came to the fore. This live album from the 1979 Baden Baden New Jazz Meeting celebrates six of these adventurers.

Singer Clarence Carter exemplified the gritty, earthy sound of Muscle Shoals R&B, fusing the devastating poignancy of the blues with a wicked, lascivious wit to create deeply soulful music rooted in the American South of the past and the present. Born January 14, 1936, in Montgomery, AL, Carter was blind from birth. He immediately gravitated to music, teaching himself guitar by listening to the blues classics of John Lee Hooker, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Jimmy Reed. He majored in music at Alabama State University, learning to transcribe charts and arrangements in Braille. On this compilation “The Best Of Clarence Carter” are collected 12 of the best tracks from Clarence Carter. Of course, they are much more than 12 tracks, but the Rhino Atlantic label offers us such a choice of this wonderful artist.

Suffice it to say, in all of music there was only one Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown. Texas music has always been a melting pot of many styles, genres, cultural and ethnic influences, but Gatemouth was a one-man cauldron of sonic intensity and originality unmatched by anyone before or since. Gatemouth Brown s live shows were always a musical roller coaster, seamlessly bouncing from song to song and instrument to instrument, with his irrepressible banter sometimes competing with the music. His was a highly personal approach, and he was a larger-than-life personality. Keeping with show biz tradition, he ‘rocked till he dropped,’ maintaining a busy touring schedule until just before he died in 2005 at 81 years old.

Some cats just need a couple of good chords, a charismatic voice and a story to tell, in order to touch anyone’s heart in seconds at. True soul singers don’t need any gimmicks or additives to project their essence, and undoubtedly, Clarence Bekker forms part of that hall of privilege. Originally a Dutch citizen born in tropical Surinam, his career has led him on plethora of paths: he was the youngest member of the successful Swinging Soul Machine Band; also a stellar member of the 08001 world music collective; and has been a prominent voice of the very viral Playing For a Change project. Life’s trials and tribulations had removed Bekker from his blazing path, causing him to take two steps back temporarily. Only a few years later, he embarked again on a fresh new start, and back to a more humble “square one”. Today, he’s back full force with renewed strength under the belt to take the stage again by storm. Fortunately we have him back, with much more strength and with more notches in the butt to raze on the stage. Listening live you will forget that nostalgia of Marvin Gaye that we all have inside. You will return to illusion with the soul as if it were the first time. Listening to Clarence Bekker will make you forget any possible nostalgia inside you, and bring joy to your soul as if it were your first live concert ever!

Having developed an obsession with her grandmother’s old Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday 45s at a young age, critically acclaimed vocalist Clare Teal went onto become one of the biggest names on the U.K. contemporary jazz scene. Born in Kildwick, a tiny village near Yorkshire, in 1973, Teal learned to play the piano, clarinet, and electronic organ before studying music at Wolverhampton University, where she discovered her vocal abilities during an impromptu exam. After stints writing jingles and selling advertising space, she signed a deal with jazz specialty label Candid Records, where she released three albums, That’s the Way It Is, Orsino’s Songs, and The Road Less Travelled. In 2004, she landed the biggest-ever record contract by a U.K. jazz artist with Sony, and scored a Top 20 album with her major-label debut, Don’t Talk. In 2005, she became a regular DJ on BBC Radio 2, hosting both the Big Band Special and Friday Night Is Music Night shows, and a year later, won the BBC Jazz Vocalist of the Year. Teal has since released three LPs, 2007’s Paradisi Carousel, 2008’s Get Happy, and 2009’s Live at the Ebenezer Chapel, appeared on Helmut Lotti’s Time to Swing, and is set to release her new studio album, Clare Teal Sings the Great British Songbook, in 2011. – Jon O’Brien

In its bell-like sonorities, clear textures and ritual manner, the piano music of Robert Saxton (born in London in 1953) suggests an almost oriental fascination with light and the way light refracts and diffracts – and yet it is audibly music written by an Englishman. In the two Books of Saxton’s Hortus Musicae in particular, this fascinating confluence generates a soundworld somewhere downstream from Takemitsu and Tippett, giving these gardens of music both a ceremonial dignity and sense of spring growth. Hailed as a pianist of ‘amazing power and panache’ (The Daily Telegraph), Clare Hammond is recognized for the virtuosity and authority of her performances and has developed a ‘reputation for brilliantly imaginative concert programmes’ (BBC Music Magazine, ‘Rising Star’). In 2016, she won the ‘Young Artist Award’ of the Royal Philharmonic Society in recognition of outstanding achievements. She is a champion of modern repertoire: this is her sixth album of music by a living composer, and she has given 35 world premieres to date. Clare completed a BA at Cambridge University, where she obtained a double first in music, and undertook postgraduate study with Ronan O’Hora at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Born in Prague in 1737, Josef Mysliveček spent most of his short life in Italy, where for a while he enjoyed success with his many operas, and became known as ‘Il Boemo’ (‘The Bohemian’). It was also in Italy – in Bologna – that he first met Mozart, in 1770. Their paths would cross again and in letters Mozart wrote about him with affection, describing him as full of ‘fire, spirit and life’. Mysliveček’s influence is apparent in Mozart’s early operas, violin concertos, symphonies and keyboard music. His music soon fell out of fashion, however, and it is only recent decades that have seen more interest in works such as the wind octets, violin concertos and symphonies. In comparison, Mysliveček’s output for keyboard has been somewhat neglected, something which the English pianist Clare Hammond seeks to rectify with her latest disc. The keyboard concertos in particular have barely seen the light of day since Mysliveček’s death and the second concerto is recorded for the first time on this disc which gathers all of the extant keyboard works. Clare Hammond, whose imaginative recording projects on BIS have received international acclaim, is here supported in the concertos by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by no one less than Nicholas McGegan, whose expertise in 18th-century style is undisputed.

As Clare Hammond writes in the liner notes to her thought-provoking selection of piano études, the genre, at its best, ‘combines the visceral excitement of technical display with expressive, coloristic and compositional ingenuity’. Opening with three studies from Sergei Lyapunov’s 12 Études d’exécution transcendante, composed around the turn of the last century, the programme demonstrates the tremendous developments that have taken place in writing for the piano over the past 120 years. Lyapunov modelled his ample études directly on Liszt’s set with the same title, and they epitomise the drama and passion of late Romanticism, fused with a distinctly Russian colour. In comparison, Szymanowski’s set of 12 Studies, written in 1916, are miniatures whose mercurial timbres and fleet textures suggest an affinity with Debussy’s études, composed one year earlier. ‘Twelve small piano pieces forming one whole, interesting technically, difficult’ is how Szymanowski described the set to his publisher. Born in the same year that Szymanowski died, Nikolai Kapustin initially set out to become a classical pianist, but at the age of 16 began to study jazz. In his early twenties he decided to focus on composition, and the Five Études in Different Intervals are characteristic of his output in that they fuse formal classical structures with jazz idioms. Of the four composers represented on this disc, Unsuk Chin is the only one who never trained as a pianist. Her six Études, the most recent set on this disc, are natural successors to those by Ligeti with whom Chin studied and reflect her fascination with virtuosity and the playful side of music-making.

On And Ex-42 Fischer pulls out all the stops as he takes on the Yamaha ex-42 electric organ, and he has some of the West Coast’s best-known sidemen with him. On Gershwin’s classic standard Soon, Fischer’s dense chords flesh out emotive images the song didn’t even know it had. Fischer sensitively reinterprets Monk’s classic Round Midnight, staying close to the melody while giving the voicings a new texture. On Lennie’s Pennies Fisher and saxophonist Gary Foster navigate legendary pianist Lennie Tristano’s tricky-hip bop lines in unison, as Fischer turns the language of bop on its head. Fischer’s Blues in F starts off as a cool, slow blues. Fischer and Foster heat it up, smoking in and out of the changes before returning to the original feel. Crystal Sunrise is a Latin-inflected piece that exhibits Fischer’s amazing feel for Latin.
