Following outstanding reviews for his interpretation of Duke Bluebeard around the world, notably at the Paris Opéra and then in Philadelphia and New York with Michelle DeYoung, John Relyea stars in this recording of Bartók’s psychological thriller. The two protagonists are joined by Edward Gardner and his Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Hungarian actor Pál Mácsai who delivers the Prologue, the work being sung in the original Hungarian. Bartók’s only opera, Bluebeard’s Castle was composed in 1911 and is based on a libretto by Béla Balázs (a room-mate of Kodály), which met Bartók’s desire for a subject that was modern, but drawn from traditional culture.

An aspect of the jazz music business that tends to be ignored is touring. There are only so many venues with budgets and booking agents. Artists who manage to find both are either popular sensations or lucky, especially in a country as spread out and diverse as the United States. It takes a lot of motivation, courage and a devil-may-care attitude to strike out on the road on your own. Brass wizard John Raymond felt that the investment he and his Real Feels bandmates had put into their music should be heard by a larger audience, no matter the cost.

In the unfettered world of the jazz musician, having a long-time working group with a unique identity and sound is a rare thing. But for over four years now, Minnesota-born trumpeter, flugelhornist and composer John Raymond has done just that. His bass-less trio Real Feels, which includes guitarist Gilad Hekselman and drummer Colin Stranahan, evokes a sense of home, companionship and comfort that his Midwest roots might suggest. However, bringing together three musicians from three distinct musical backgrounds make the group a model of what defines American music — a melting pot of influences tied together by a close bond of warm-hearted kinship. Their newest album “Joy Ride” accomplishes this in its fullest sense.

Seeing as how Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark aren’t with us any more, we’d best make the most of our remaining time with John Prine! A great songwriter who is little-known this side of the Atlantic, but adored by a cult following back home, Prine started as a protégé of Kris Kristofferson, and is anything but a sub-Dylan. Prine has even become known as one of the most underrated portraitists of his generation. And while his wry humour always protects him from any temptation towards soppiness, he also knows how to touch the heart. With Prine, above all, anti-establishment spirit is never far from the surface. It’s rare to see caustic wit and pure emotion blended together with such talent… After a superb record full of mixed duets with Kacey Musgraves, Lee Ann Womack, Alison Krauss, Susan Tedeschi, Iris DeMent, Amanda Shires and Miranda Lambert, John Prine has brought out his first record in 13 years made up entirely of new songs.

“John Prine” is the first album by American Country/Folk singer-songwriter John Prine. His 1971 self-titled debut set the tone for the rest of his career. A critical smash and a commercial disappointment, the record contains many of his best known compositions. Proving himself capable of tackling folk balladry, country, and rock with ease, Prine seems to spring into being as a fully formed singer-songwriter at age 24. Lyrically diverse, Prine offers topical songs such as “Sam Stone”, the tale of a drug addicted Vietnam vet, achingly sad songs, such as the oft-covered “Angel from Montgomery”, and, of course, his trademark wit gets ample time in the spotlight. Produced by the legendary Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Hall and Oates), the record is understated, letting Prine’s comfy voice drive things. When needed, the famous house band at American Recording Studios in Memphis kicks in tasteful backing.

Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark had lain waiting for some years before John Prime succumbed to Covd-19 and joined them in April 2020 at the age of 73. The great songwriter and storyteller (who is little-known on this side of the pond but is somewhat of an idolized cult figure back home in the States) began his career as a protégé to Kris Kristofferson and recorded seven albums with Atlantic and Asylum between 1971 and 1980. All are remastered in this collection: John Prine (1971), Diamonds in the Rough (1972), Sweet Revenge (1973), Common Sense (1975), Bruised Orange (1978), Pink Cadillac (1979) and Storm Windows (1980). To understand the scale of Prine’s influence, two quotes from musicians from two different generation among thousands who flooded to social media to upon the announcement of his death. Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver: “A simple majority of who I am as a person, let alone a musician, is because of John Prine.”. Bruce Springsteen: “John and I were “new Dylans” together in the early 70s and he was never anything but the loveliest guy in the world. A true national treasure and a songwriter for the ages.” These seven albums (especially the first four), prove that John Prine was one of the great portraitists of his generation. While his dark sense of humour prevented him from sounding soppy, he nevertheless had a knack for touching hearts with empathy and humility. With Prine, anti-establishment was never low on the agenda as he fused wit and emotion with rarely seen talent… – Marc Zisman

On the soundtrack to Solo: A Star Wars Story, John Powell became just the third person to compose a score for a live-action Star Wars film, following in the footsteps of John Williams and Rogue One’s Michael Giacchino. Without the burden of the official episode saga installments, Powell took the liberty to experiment with fresh sounds (for the Star Wars universe), delivering the most intriguing and nontraditional Star Wars music to date. Powell employs non-orchestral instrumentation, exciting and unexpected rhythmic percussion, and a choir to great effect (especially as a motif for the newly introduced band of Marauders). After Williams puts his trademark stamp on the project with a lone contribution (“The Adventures of Han”), Powell launches into hyperspace, adapting Williams’ familiar leitmotifs (“Meet Han,” “L3 & Millennium Falcon,” “Break Out,” “Reminiscence Therapy,” “Into the Maw,” and “Dice & Roll”) and injecting each composition with flair. The rousing “Corellia Chase” and “Flying with Chewie” swoop and sweep, but it’s not until “Train Heist” that Powell truly claims Solo as his own. Funky and primal, “Train Heist” pumps the coaxium hyperfuel into Solo and doesn’t look back. The sole pop track on the album belongs to vocalist Baraka May, whose slinky and sultry “Chicken in the Pot” sounds more like a trip-hop Bond theme than a Star Wars cantina tune. It’s one of many surprises that make Solo a fun, exciting, and engaging experience. Tasked with filling Williams’ iconic shoes, Powell didn’t simply mimic the master — as in Giacchino’s case — but instead charted his own course, capturing the outlaw spirit of the roguish Han Solo himself in the process. – Neil Z. Yeung
