Ante Lucem, a powerful work for jazz quintet and symphony orchestra by Finnish composer and musician Iro Haarla, was commissioned by the Norrlands Opera Symphony Orchestra and its leader Marco Feklistoff and premiered in October 2012 with Haarla and his quintet joining the orchestra. The concert was recorded live and this album is drawn both from the premiere and from sessions recorded in the days following.

Here we meet Jorg Widmann as soloist, conductor and composer. With his piece Con brio, premiered in 2008, he pays a vibrant tribute to Beethoven in general and his Seventh Symphony in particular. At the head of the excellent Irish Chamber Orchestra, of which he is principal conductor, he has also recorded the aforementioned Symphony no.7, which occupies a special place among the most grandiose works of Beethoven; he himself considered the second movement to be one of his finest compositions! He wrote this symphony in 1812, when deafness was beginning to take its toll on him, the Napoleonic Wars were raging in Russia, and he met Goethe. Richard Strauss was in his twilight years when he composed his last instrumental work, the Duett-Concertino for clarinet and bassoon with string orchestra and harp, in 1947.

One of the most beautiful combinations is the Graupner Triple Concerto for oboe d’amore, viola d’amore and flute d’amore, which produces an exquisite blend of other-worldly colours.
Wonderfully kaleidoscopic colours also pervade the concertos by Heinichen and Fasch, the latter proving just why Telemann and Bach held him in such high esteem.

Piano-Drums Duos are the preferred playing arrangement of pianist Irène Schweizer. Her mastery of duets with important drummers of contemporary jazz are documented on numerous Intakt CDs. Han Bennink, Pierre Favre, Louis Moholo, Günter Baby Sommer, Andrew Cyrille and Joey Baron among them. The Chicago drummer Hamid Drake, born in 1955, and Irène Schweizer, born in 1941, have performed together on numerous occasions both in Europe and Chicago. Together they have appeared on the Intakt CD “Irène Schweizer-Fred Anderson-Hamid Drake”. At the 40th anniversary festival “Kontrontationen in Nickelsdorf” (Austria), Schweizer and Drake were the highlight of the event. Francis Poulenc owes his fame to his operatic works (Dialogues des Carmélites, Les Mamelles de Tirésias, La Voix humaine), his treasure-house of mélodies, his concertos and his sacred music, but his output for piano and small ensembles remains relatively little-known. Yet the catalogue of his chamber music comprises more than twenty works, including the Sonata for Violin and Piano composed in the dark years of the war, the only piece for these forces that he did not destroy. It was written in 1942-43 in memory of the Andalusian poet Federico García Lorca, murdered by the Francoists, and was premiered by an unforgettable duo, the outstanding young violinist Ginette Neveu with the composer at the piano. Poulenc struggled over its composition, refusing to produce, as he said himself, ‘prima donna violin over piano arpeggios’. Which goes to explain its originality, but also, perhaps, its reminiscences of other music, including a few tender borrowings from Tchaikovsky. The sonata unfolds in a sombre, tragic, sometimes sarcastic atmosphere, with moments of violence. The meditative Intermezzo was inspired by the opening line of Las seis cuerdas (The six strings) from Lorca’s Poema del cante jondo: ‘La guitarra / hace llorar a los sueños’ (The guitar / makes dreams weep). …

Dieses Engagement ist nun auf ‘Vivaldi in a Mirror’ zu erleben, mit einer einzigartigen Auswahl an Concertos von Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741). Die Inspiration für die Konzerte für zumeist zwei oder vier paarweise angeordnete Solo-Streicher liegt in der Heimatstadt des Komponisten.
