Miniatures and large forms. The work of a young musician of 25, the celebrated Concerto of Grieg combines the great Romantic tradition (Liszt was one of its most fervent admirers) and Norwegian folk music, with the halling and springdans of its thrilling finale. Yet the composer never wrote another, for he felt more comfortable writing in miniature forms. In 35 years he produced no fewer than 66 Lyric Pieces, every one a gem, from the truculent March of the Trolls to the poetic meditations of Homesickness and Remembrances.

Late Russian pianist Emil Gilels, considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, lovingly recorded these 20 selections from Grieg’s oeuvre of 66 short Lyric Pieces in 1974. The programme opens and closes with Grieg’s first and very last lyric pieces and includes Butterfly, one of Grieg’s best known compositions.

Soprano Camilla Tilling plays a leading part in the fifth and final volume of audite’s complete recording of Edvard Grieg’s orchestral works: although Grieg drew on his own songs with orchestra or piano for the Six Orchestral Songs, this set forms an independent, elegiacally-hued cycle reflecting the core of Grieg’s personality. It includes not only two songs from the incidental music to Peer Gynt (Solveig’s Song and Solveig’s Lullaby) but also transcriptions of solemn piano songs such as the Roman ballad From Monte Pincio, or the memory of the short-lived Norwegian patriot Henrik Wergeland, to whom the final song (sung by Tom Erik Lie) is dedicated. This recording gathers several important examples of the less familiar Edvard Grieg as composer of songs with orchestra.

The fourth volume of audite’s complete recording of Edvard Grieg’s orchestral works with the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln and the conductor Eivind Aadland combines the most popular work by the Norwegian national composer with his least known: the Piano Concerto in A minor, performed here by Herbert Schuch, represented the 25-year-old Grieg’s breakthrough to international fame and is one of a handful of great piano concertos on which every pianist is judged. In the concerto, the influence of Schumann, his great model (Grieg had, after all, studied in Leipzig), is combined with that of Norwegian folk music – for the first time in a work by Grieg these national elements can be detected, which enthused not only his compatriots but also his wider European audience.

The band returned to the studio in October, working with producer Billy Bush (Garbage, Muse) and a selection of alternate vocal tracks from Bennington. The concept of an acoustic release was something Grey Daze had discussed prior to the release of Amends, knowing that the songs present an entirely new aspect to the material and spotlight Bennington’s immense talent, something they’d only been able to witness in the studio.

This album is the result of a chance meeting between jazz pianist Aruan Ortiz an myself. He was playing in my home town of Voss, Norway, together with the Don Byron quartet. During a conversation he asked me if I sang? I replied: «A little bit», and asked if he would like to hear one of my own songs written that same day. He was kind enough to listen, and with inspiring words he encouraged me to follow my ideas and continue to write.

He invited me to join him in New York for a recording session, and I had the wonderful experience of working alongside great musicians who played my music so beautifully. Although this has been my first studio recording, under Aruans professional guidance, together with his arrangements and production, the music has become alive, playful and energetic and at the same time it has broadened the complexity of its harmony and rhythms.

Although these songs and lyrics has a personal background and express own experiences, moods and emotions, my hope is that the listener can relate to the universal expressions of love, loss and life. Enjoy!

Luciano Berios Coro has been described as the work that exemplifies all the qualities that made him one of the leading composers of our time. The works full title is Coro for voices and instruments, and the 40 voices and 44 instrumentalists do indeed make up a single choir instrumentalists and singers sit together, with each singer paired with a particular player, and used both as soloists and combined in mass effects. Composed in 1976, Coro is also a strikingly global work: Berios use of texts (mainly translations of folk poetry) attributed to peoples Peruvian, Croatian, Sioux turns the work into a chorus of cultures. The texts are laid out in 31 separate sections of varying length, but the overall effect is cumulative, not episodic. Under its artistic director Grete Pedersen the Norwegian Soloists Choir has made acclaimed recordings of music ranging from Norwegian folk songs and Hildegard of Bingen to Bach, Brahms and Xenakis. Joined by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra it now takes on one of the major choral works of the past 50 years. The disc closes with Berios smaller scale Cries of London, performed by members of the choir.

Dancing with the Beast, the new album from Gretchen Peters, puts female characters at the fore, from teenage girls to old women. And intentionally so. With the 2017 Women’s March and the #MeToo Movement as bookends to her writing time, Peters knew that a feminist perspective would be the critical core of the record. She admits, “You can trace the feminist DNA in my songwriting back to ‘Independence Day’ and probably before. The thing that 2017 did is just put it front and center.” Though Peters doesn’t consider herself a political writer, she is politically minded and, therefore, knew she had to address the 2016 election and all that has happened since… but in her own way.

Gretchen Parlato continues her love story with bossa nova and Latin jazz with great precision. This Californian who has sung alongside the likes of Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Terence Blanchard, Marcus Miller, Kenny Baron and Lionel Loueke did give her album the Portuguese title Flor (flower in English) by accident. This release breaks a three-year silence on the recording front. Parlato sings like a plant opens, offers herself to those who will listen, and exudes a sensuality that one can almost smell. “My art has always reflected my life”, she says. “These days, I’m finding the balance between artistic creativity and nurturing motherhood. My purpose now has both a higher and deeper meaning, and this project is a musical representation of that journey.”

Greta Van Fleet – The Battle at Garden’s Gate (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

The Battle at Garden’s Gate is the kind of album title that accurately reflects the contents within. Greta Van Fleet isn’t much concerned with the modern world, preferring to live in a fantasy of their own creation, one cobbled together with ideas learned from old albums from Led Zeppelin, Rush, and Styx. All these elements were in place on their 2018 debut Anthem of the Peaceful Army, but they’re amplified on The Battle at Garden’s Gate, an album that makes everything that worked the first time bigger and louder, or just more. The group’s unexpected success meant they had the power to enlist an A-list producer, so they brought Greg Kurstin – a Grammy winner for his work with Adele and Beck who also helmed records by Paul McCartney and Foo Fighters – into the studio to help shape their fanciful notions and heavy riffs. Kurstin manages to conjure the expansive vistas that were so common in 1974, letting the band puff up their pomp and ramble on. As texture is Greta Van Fleet’s main gift, this is for the best: the extra length gives the impression that the group is in control of their fantasy. This spell works best when guitarist Jake Kiszka, bassist Sam Kiszka, and drummer Danny Wagner labor to conjure the ghost of Houses of the Holy, paying rapt attention to the slight shifts in light and shade. The spell is punctured whenever Josh Kiszka stumbles in to caterwaul his tales of barbarians and nations. More Geddy Lee than Robert Plant, Josh Kiszka commands attention then alienates; his wail is the weak link in a group who is getting better at their period-accurate cosplay. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Greta Van Fleet are brothers Josh (vocals), Jake (guitar), Sam (bass/keys) Kiszka, & best friend Danny Wagner (drums). With their debut single ‘Highway Tune’ #1 at Active and Mainstream Rock radio, their first-ever tour of the U.S. completely sold-out, Greta Van Fleet is – in just a few months – as hot a brand-new band as one can be. „From The Fires“ is the band’s debut mini-album, which includes the 4 tracks from their previously released EP, ‘Black Smoke Rising’ along with 4 new tracks. Putting the four old tracks and the four new recordings together made perfect sense, says singer Josh Kiszka: “All eight of these songs share a theme of basic humanity.”

Greta Van Fleet – Jake Kiszka/guitars, Sam Kiszka/bass & keys, Josh Kiszka/vocals, and Danny Wagner/drums – is very proud to announce the upcoming release of the band’s debut album, Anthem of The Peaceful Army, due out October 19 on Virgin EMI/Lava Records. Collectively written by all four band members, the ten original songs explore a variety of topics that include fresh starts, love, integrity, innocence, adventure, diversity and peace, the life cycle and its inherent responsibilities, courage, masked deceptions, revolution, and truth. Blending rock, soul and blues, Jake’s blazing guitar riffs, Josh’s soaring, powerful vocals, Danny’s thunderous drums, and Sam’s swaggering baselines and keys create a menagerie of musical elements throughout. Anthem of the Peaceful Army was produced by Marlon Young, Al Sutton and Herschel Boone (The Rust Brothers) and recorded earlier this year at Blackbird Studios in Nashville and Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak, Michigan.
