Symphonic, solo, choral, chamber, theatre and electronic music composer Carlos Vazquez is one of the most outstanding Latin American contemporary composers coming from the Caribbean basin. Ha has composed and presented the two most ambitious work done in his country; the opera La Mina de Oro and the Requiem domesticus. Born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, Vázquez studied music at the University of Puerto Rico, University of Pittsburgh, New York University and La Sorbonne in Paris, where he earned a Doctoral degree. His composition teachers have been Rafael Aponte Ledée, Frank Mccarthy and Bruce Sailor. Under the sponsorship of the Rockefeller Foundation, he attended a seminar on new computer music techniques at Stanford University in 1995.

Debussy’s string quartet op. 10 was considered perturbing at the time on the Parisian music scene and has since become an absolute staple of quartet repertoire. It sweeps us along the most unexpected harmonic pathways and takes inspiration from sound-worlds as diverse as jazz, gamelan ensembles and Spanish folk music. Rich in colour and exotic tonalities, this poetic masterpiece frees itself from traditional Western customs and stands as a unique bridge between different cultures. It was the famous Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaye’s string quartet who commissioned the work. They later defended it from the many accusations of “too modern”. With Opus 10’s ties to Belgium, France and Armenia, The Akhtamar quartet immediately related to it and placed the piece at the heart of their repertoire. The Akhtamar quartet chose its name in reference to both the ancient Armenian myth and the Komitas Miniatures arranged by Aslamazyan, which they have played with passion since their formation.

Brahms had long been immersed in the folk traditions and spirit of Hungary’s musical repertoire, not least through the famous violinist Ede Reményi, for whom he played as piano accompanist. Brahms employed melodies that he had heard, as well as those based on sheet music, and in this album his Hungarian Dances are presented alongside their source material and variants, as well as some elements that Brahms omitted from his settings. Contextualised in this way, the heroic strength and dynamism, as well as the melancholy of the Dances can be heard as never before.

High Drama is such an ideal title for Adam Lambert, a singer who specializes in grand, overheated gestures, that it comes as a slight disappointment to realize that it arrives in service of a covers album. Thankfully, Lambert doesn’t take his task lightly here: he takes pains to give the 11 songs on High Drama distinctive arrangements that clearly delineate his version from the original. Also, he doesn’t stick to classics, either of the canon or cult variety. A few warhorses are hauled out onto the track — Duran Duran’s “Ordinary World,” Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero,” Ann Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” Culture Club’s “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” — but they’re heard alongside selections from Billie Eilish, Sia, Lana Del Rey, P!nk, and Kings of Leon. For good measure, he adds an unexpected coda of pioneering glam rocker Jobriath’s “I’m a Man” and Noel Coward’s “Mad About the Boy,” functioning as a nod to queer pop history. This pair of songs are the only tunes on High Drama that couldn’t conceivably be heard on American Idol, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There’s a certain kick in hearing Lambert effectively return to his roots, scheming to deliver snazzy, memorable renditions of songs the audience knows by heart. More often than not, he delivers on High Drama, particularly on the insistent glitter march of “Holding Out for a Hero” and a smoldering electro makeover of “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me.” – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

“LOST” is the new studio album of the artist Ada Morghe (Alexandra Helmig). Over 14 songs and with top-class guests like Till Brönner, soul authentically meets jazz, funk and blues. Co-produced by Hans-Martin Buff (Die Prinzen, Zucchero, No Doubt or Prince).
Behind the musician Ada Morghe is the author, actress and speaker Alexandra Helmig. She has appeared in numerous film and TV productions, set audio books to music and accompanied Margret Atwood and Elizabeth Gilbert, among others, on reading tours as a German voice. In 2019, Ada Morghe made her breakthrough with her debut album “Pictures”, and the singer-songwriter followed up her success with her second album “BOX” in 2020. A year later, she reunited with her band at Real World Studios. In the luggage no more than the idea to create an album around the four elements (earth, water, fire and air), no notes, no lyrics, no rules. As with her previous albums, the artist collaborated with musicians well-known in the London jazz scene Livingstone Brown (bass), Luca Boscagin (guitar), Josh “McKNasty” McKenzie (drums) and Luke Smith (keyboards), as well as producer Hans-Martin Buff. She was also able to secure Till Brönner (flugelhorn) for a feature on the song “At This Place.” In this creative setting, Morghe and her band managed to create a concept album within a few days that not only unites the elements musically, but also the people, their stories and their uniqueness.

Maestro di cappella in two conservatories in Naples, Francesco Durante was one of the prominent representatives of the eighteenth-century Neapolitan school. A unique case in the history of Neapolitan music, Durante did not write any opera and devoted himself exclusively to pedagogical works and to the composition of sacred and instrumental music. His Concerti per archi are among the most significant contributions to the genre of the orchestral concerto. They represent a summa of the early eighteenth-century Neapolitan style. Durante blends the main aesthetic approaches of the time, from the stricter contrapuntal style – illustrated by fugue, canon, and Recercare movements – to the new galant style – transpiring from the slow cantabile or in movements marked Affettuoso or Amoroso. Besides the eight better-known Concerti included in all manuscript sources, this recording also contains a ninth concerto found in a single, but authoritative source. The Accademia dell’Annunciata has risen to prominence with three successful albums alongside Giuliano Carmignola and Mario Brunello. Now, more than thirty years after the pioneering recording by Concerto Köln, the Milanese ensemble wholly fulfils its promise with a refreshing reading of these orchestral masterpieces from the late Baroque, to be paired with the famous Concerti per archi by Vivaldi.

In 1707 Joseph Marchand published his seven suites de pièces mêlée de sonates pour le violon et la basse. Marchand, who is completely forgotten today, played the violone in the prestigious Chapelle Royale and other ensembles under Louis XIV.
His suites introduced the dangerous double trill for the first time. With his wealth of ideas, the beauty of his harmonies, his virtuosity and his concern for balance of forms and voices, Marchand stands worthily in the tradition of Marin Marais, Sainte-Colombe or François Couperin.
The {oh!} Trio led by violinist Martyna Pastuszka brings to life a jewel of the early 18th century.

Joshua Daniel White (February 11, 1914 – September 5, 1969) was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, actor and civil rights activist. He also recorded under the names Pinewood Tom and Tippy Barton in the 1930s.
White grew up in the South during the 1920s and 1930s. He became a prominent race records artist, with a prolific output of recordings in genres including Piedmont blues, country blues, gospel music, and social protest songs. In 1931, White moved to New York, and within a decade his fame had spread widely. His repertoire expanded to include urban blues, jazz, traditional folk songs, and political protest songs, and he was in demand as an actor on radio, Broadway, and film.
However, White’s anti-segregationist and international human rights political stance presented in many of his recordings and in his speeches at rallies were subsequently used by McCarthyites as a pretext for labeling him a communist to slander and harass him. From 1947 through the mid-1960s, White was caught up in the anti-communist Red Scare, and as a consequence his career suffered. Nonetheless, White’s musical style would go on to influence several generations of musical artists.

Songs From The Seasons is the fascinating culmination of a much bigger project. In 2016, Joshua “embarked upon an ambitious project to release his own arrangements of a traditional song or tune digitally each week, reflecting the seasons as the following year progressed.” There were over 25 musicians involved with the project, which ultimately resulted in the production of four conceptually themed albums collectively known as The Season Project. The work is bang up to date and bang to rights, in as much as Joshua has managed to breathe a new modern conception to the material. Initially, before considering instrumentation, he focused on the songs and tunes, resulting in a sophisticated, refreshing and relevant finished product. Songs From The Seasons is what it says on the tin – 14, handpicked, favourites from the overall collection.
