John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1912 or 1917 – June 21, 2001) was an American blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist. The son of a sharecropper, he rose to prominence performing an electric guitar-style adaptation of Delta blues. Hooker often incorporated other elements, including talking blues and early North Mississippi Hill country blues. He developed his own driving-rhythm boogie style, distinct from the 1930s–1940s piano-derived boogie-woogie. Hooker was ranked 35 in Rolling Stone’s 2015 list of 100 greatest guitarists.

When this two-LP set was initially released in January 1971, Canned Heat was back to its R&B roots, sporting slightly revised personnel. In the spring of the previous year, Larry “The Mole” Taylor (bass) and Harvey Mandel (guitar) simultaneously accepted invitations to join John Mayall’s concurrent incarnation of the Bluesbreakers. This marked the return of Henry “Sunflower” Vestine (guitar) and the incorporation of Antonio “Tony” de la Barreda (bass), a highly skilled constituent of Aldolfo de la Parra (drums). Sadly, it would also be the final effort to include co-founder Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson, who passed away in September 1970. Hooker ‘n Heat (1971) is a low-key affair split between unaccompanied solo John Lee Hooker (guitar/vocals) tunes, collaborations between Hooker and Wilson (piano/guitar/harmonica), as well as five full-blown confabs between Hooker and Heat. The first platter focuses on Hooker’s looser entries that vacillate from the relatively uninspired ramblings of “Send Me Your Pillow” and “Drifter” to the essential and guttural “Feelin’ Is Gone” or spirited “Bottle Up and Go.” The latter being among those with Wilson on piano. Perhaps the best of the batch is the lengthy seven-minute-plus “World Today,” which is languid and poignant talking blues, with Hooker lamenting the concurrent state of affairs around the globe. “I Got My Eyes on You” is an unabashed derivative of Hooker’s classic “Dimples,” with the title changed for what were most likely legal rather than artistic concerns. That said, the readings of the seminal “Burning Hell” and “Bottle Up and Go” kept their familiar monikers intact. The full-fledged collaborations shine as both parties unleash some of their finest respective work. While Canned Heat get top bill – probably as it was the group’s record company that sprung for Hooker ‘n Heat – make no mistake, as Hooker steers the combo with the same gritty and percussive guitar leads that have become his trademark. The epic “Boogie Chillen No. 2” stretches over 11 and a half minutes and is full of the same swagger as the original, with the support of Canned Heat igniting the verses and simmering on the subsequent instrumental breaks with all killer and no filler. The 2002 two-CD pressing by the French Magic Records label is augmented with “It’s All Right,” with a single edit of “Whiskey and Wimmen.”

Über Glaube – Ein Portrait (About Faith – A Portrait): This is the title of the debut album of voicemade, the outstanding Leipzig a cappella ensemble. With their program, the six young musicians span centuries to combine music of the Renaissance with modern times. The track list includes music by William Byrd, Giovanni Gabrieli, and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, compositions by Volker Bräutigam, Günther Ramin, and Bob Chilcott, as well as works by Robert Pohlers, Damien Kehoe and Paul Heller, the three youngest composers on the album, all of whom were born in 1990 or later. Their works are heard here as world premiere recordings. Tonal beauty and textual comprehensibility, used in the service of expression and depth of interpretation, are obvious instruments for voicemade. An extraordinary album in repertoire and programmatic approach!

“A new hope of German jazz,” recognized mdr Kultur, to which Deutschlandfunk added: “a band that will take off like a rocket.” American Downbeat heard “excitement and enthusiasm” in Vincent Meissner’s 2021 debut album “Bewegtes Feld,” produced by his mentor Michael Wollny. The pianist was only twenty at the time and already decorated with prizes. Much praise, much honor … Yet his young acoustic piano trio with bassist Josef Zeimetz and drummer Henri Reichmann had hardly had the opportunity to present and develop the rich material composed entirely by the band leader live.

Variations and salon miniatures by the father of the classical tradition in Russia. Mikhail Glinka’s piano works lie in the shadow of his operas, romances and orchestral music but they share the distinctive voice, the brilliance and Franco-Russian accent of foundational pieces in the Russian classical tradition such as Ruslan and Ludmila. The works recorded here date from the 1820s to the 1840s, when there was no regular concert life or musical education in Russia and when the salon and the opera still formed the centres of musical life. Glinka models his keyboard writing accordingly on the forms immortalised by Chopin such as the waltz, nocturne and mazurka, and the variations on songs, popular Italian opera melodies. Viacheslav Shelepov opens this beautifully curated album with a delicious set of variations on Alyabyev’s song The Nightingale, cast in a nostalgic E minor.

Born in the Bois-Francs region (Victoriaville), Véronique was surrounded by music from an early age. At the age of three, she began learning the violin with Nicole Larivière of the Vivaldi movement. First enrolled in the music program at Sacré-Coeur elementary school, she continued her instrumental studies at Mitchell and Montcalm high schools in Sherbrooke and then at Jean-de-Brébeuf school in Quebec City. At the same time, she took private violin and piano lessons.

Member of duos and string quartets, participant in solo competitions, it seemed at this time that Véronique would know the usual course of a violinist. But Jean-de-Brébeuf’s teachers offered her very different openings: she joined the school’s various jazz ensembles and combos as a pianist. Without her suspecting it, these experiences will take on great importance in her life.

Her abilities as a classical musician being then recognized, she decided to embark on both styles at the same time. She continued her violin training at Cégep Sainte-Foy, then perfected her skills at the University of Ottawa with Calvin Sieb as well as with Christian Vachon, Conservatoire de Gatineau. Also a singer, she studied with Madeleine Osbourne and tenor Steeve Michaud, among others.
Touching on different musical styles and genres, she continued her career as a violinist in the Orchester symphonique de Gatineau, in a French music trio with Michel Normandeau (Harmonium) as well as with various jazz formations. His activities are shared between the stage and teaching. His private studio accommodates about thirty students. Thanks to her experiences as a violinist, pianist and singer, Véronique now performs with a wide variety of classical, jazz, hip hop and pop ensembles.

For her debut concerto album, violinist Veronika Eberle revisits a work that has endured more than two centuries, and shares a fresh interpretation featuring new cadenzas by composer Jörg Widmann.

Not only is Beethoven’s Violin Concerto a particular favourite of Veronika, it has been central to her career to date—most notably alongside Sir Simon Rattle, who has been Veronika’s long-time supporter and collaborator. When she was just 16, Sir Simon introduced her at the 2006 Salzburg Easter Festival, where she performed this very concerto to a packed Salzburg Festpielhaus.

On this album, the pair reunite to bring this sublime masterpiece to life, and to celebrate the work that first brought Veronika to international attention.

VC2’s second full-length album, I and Thou, reflects on the role relationships play, whether fleeting or lasting, in how humans construct meaning in the world. The title of the record, and the philosophy to which it refers, comes from Philosopher Martin Buber. This idea became particularly salient during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the relationships we enjoyed with our family, friends, and community weathered a strain never before seen in modern times. In the spirit of the album’s context, VC2 invited some colleagues with whom they enjoy the closest of relationships to contribute to the album. Together, they form the record I and Thou. A pensive, deliberate rumination on the power of relationships to undergird a pillar of a person’s well-being; the need for meaning.
