Pour parler d’amour, de la perte, du questionnement lié au sentiment amoureux, Keren Ann a donc choisi l’élément liquide…

L’eau, celle de la mer et de ses ressacs puissants, de ses bouillons parfois meurtriers aussi.
L’eau, c’est aussi celle des larmes de peines ou d’émotions qui parfois lavent de toutes les mélancolies.
L’eau, c’est bien sûr celle de la pluie, amie des jours chagrins, et manteau des jours de nuit.
L’eau de la source enfin, qui évoque ici l’énergie des jours heureux, titre de la chanson d’ouverture de ce disque plein et matriciel.

Matriciel car, dès la première écoute on sent confusément que Keren Ann fait parler à la fois le cœur de son ventre, et l’instinct d’une femme en prière pour rester debout, même lorsque l’amour la tue comme un poison lent.

Elle en fait une chanson en forme de mantra, sublime et déchirant, comme pour exorciser une peine.

In the 19th Century, Russian music was still dominated the Italian and French repertoires. But young composers were taking things in a new direction. In the face of westernisation, they were working to recreate an unbroken Russian thread, with folk melodies centre stage. In this vein, Modest Mussorgski created a synthesis of centuries-old Russian folk music and the musical language of Romanticism. His opera Boris Godunov exemplified this approach: every character has their own identifying theme, in the manner of the Wagnerian leitmotif, and the discourse exploits popular Russian idiom. The writing and the harmony have an impressive aloofness, which immediately stands out as Russian. The orchestration – and in particular the use of clocks in the second part of the prologue, or the coronation scene – corroborates this picture. Finally – and what is particularly salient in this version – is the vocality of this great score, which is eminently lyrical and follows the prosody of the language. The work’s choral character – Varlaam’s song at the tavern, for example, with choirs that chant the score – lends it a grandiose realism which never falls into the picturesque.

Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014) was an unassuming giant of modern jazz, a daring improviser, and a writer of many beautiful and slyly unorthodox tunes. His recorded legacy includes albums now regarded as contemporary jazz classics such as Gnu High, Deer Wan, Music For Large And Small Ensembles and Angel Song. In December 2013 he recorded what was to be his last album. Songs for Quintet, an inspirational session featuring Wheeler compositions of recent vintage (plus a fresh approach to “Nonetheless”, first heard on Angel Song), was recorded in London’s Abbey Road Studio with four of Kenny’s favourite players. Stan Sulzmann, John Parricelli, Chris Laurence and Martin France work together marvellously as an interactive unit, solo persuasively, and provide support for the tender and lyrical flugelhorn of the bandleader. Songs for Quintet is issued on January 14, 2015, which would have been Kenny Wheeler’s 85th birthday.

Born in Toronto in 1930 but based in England from 1952, Kenny Wheeler was by the late 1960s a highly regarded figure on the London scene, living a sort of double life – as a post-bop trumpeter and flugelhorn player inspired by Clifford Brown and Art Farmer and as a pioneering free player moving into unexplored territory alongside improvisers such as John Stevens, Evan Parker, Dave Holland and Derek Bailey.

Jazz tradition and free experimentation would intermingle in Wheeler’s palette as player and composer. As he put it, “the free stuff relaxed my conventional playing and the conventional playing gave shape to my free soloing,” and ideas discovered in improvising, especially a fondness for intervallic leaps, were subsequently deployed in his pieces. He cited Duke Ellington, Gil Evans and Stan Kenton as formative influences on his writing but also listened closely to classical and contemporary composition; Paul Hindemith was another key influence.

Melody was the core of his own writing, and he always found new ways to frame it, harmonically and rhythmically. In terms of emotional atmosphere, he found melancholy cheering. “Sad music makes me feel happy,” he said. “My favourite people in jazz are the ones who sound a bit sad. Billie Holiday, Miles Davis.” His recorded legacy includes albums now regarded as contemporary jazz classics such as Gnu High, Deer Wan, Music For Large And Small Ensembles and Angel Song.

His 1978 masterpiece Deer Wan was engineered by Jan Erik Kongshaug and finds wheeler working with top shelf musicians like Jan Garbarek (saxophone), John Abercrombie (guitar/mandolin), Dave Holland (bass), Ralph Towner (12-string guitar), and Jack DeJohnette (drums). Featuring four original smooth Wheeler compositions, three of which clock in at over 10-minutes, Deer Wan is both lyrical and romantic in all the right places.

66 years old and with a discography stretching to forty albums, Kenny Werner comes from a line of discreet but indispensable jazzmen. Still animated by a great spirituality, his piano is venerated by colleagues who know the value of this musician who played with the greats like Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, Mel Lewis, Ron Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Bob Brookmeyer, Joe Henderson, Al Cohn, Tom Harrell, Chris Potter, Brian Blade and Lee Konitz. As for his extensive teaching (Brad Mehldau was one of his students), he confirms here the total devotion to jazz which has marked his whole life. A beauty and a serenity which he couples with consummate creativity. This album, which he has made with the help of his rhythm section (the double–bassist Johannes Weidenmüller and the wonderful drummer Ari Hoenig have been with him for years) is rich and abundant. On their re-imaginings of standards like The Song Is You or If I Should Lose You, the trio take some delicious risks. In terms of the writing, there too, the three musicians’ creativity reaches its zenith: where they work together, and where they spar.

The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band will be releasing their first ever live concert video in 10 years this winter. ‘Straight To You: Live’ will be released on 27th November via Provogue. Their only other live output, the ’Live! In Chicago’ album was released a decade ago and got itself a Grammy nomination along the way, but this time around for 2020, you get to watch the band in its full glory as well as listen. In the last 10 years the multi-platinum selling Shepherd has gone from strength to strength, winning countless awards, releasing four studio albums and touring the world over several times – from Brazil to Europe, India to Canada and US to Australia and beyond. The band were only weeks into ‘The Traveler World Tour’ when the Covid-19 pandemic broke, and the world came to a standstill. The show took place at the famous Leverkusen Jazzstage for the iconic German TV show, Rockpalast on 25th November 2019. The seven-piece band took the stage and immediately launched into their most-recent hit-single ‘Woman Like You,’ with the honey-soaked powerhouse voice of Noah Hunt blasting “I ain’t looking for a one time girl” backed by the fiery fretwork of Shepherd.
