Given the paucity of César Franck’s piano music on disc, Nikolai Lugansky’s focus on this composer is to be commended. On his third release for harmonia mundi, the Russian pianist reveals an organ master strongly attached to the musical forms inherited from J.S. Bach: the prelude, the fugue, and the chorale. Translated to the piano keyboard, Franck’s music, with it’s expansively conceived structures, requires a completely fresh approach that puts the greatest performers to the test: here, Lugansky took on an additional challenge by preparing his own transcription (a brilliant one, at that!) of Franck’s celebrated Choral pour grand orgue No.2.

Bach & Piazzolla – two composers who actually have nothing to do with each other? Nevertheless, the Serbian accordionist Nikola Djoric, who lives in Austria, has united them on one album, creating above all a world of sound unknown to Bach. Together with the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester under the direction of Hans-Peter Hoffmann, he has recorded both Piazzolla’s famous concert for bandoneon “Aconcagua” and Bach’s harpsichord concertos 1 & 7. One thing was important to him in the realization of these works:
“With this music, a faithful musical text is presented; nothing was changed, no arrangements were made. I play the scores of Bach and Piazzolla 1:1 on the accordion, and the listener has the opportunity to experience works known to him in a different timbre. The instrument offers an incomparable charm with its singing ability and complexity. Just imagine: A wind instrument that plays polyphonically when inhaling and exhaling and lets the sound emerge in the air; a keyboard instrument that can phrase tones like strings with a bow, with two different manuals, over 500 notes, 20 sound registers and a musician who plays with all ten fingers and can breathe freely – this is the button accordion, it sings and breathes.”.

On his debut solo album “Hope Is The Sister Of Despair” under the alias Microphase, Niko Tzoukmanis clearly confesses his roots in 90s ambient techno, UK electronica as well as the techno sound of Detroit. He creates unique sound spheres and melodies that won’t leave the ear canal after repeated listens. “Lost In Space” is a very epic track which lives up to its title and takes enough time to build up a tension that is penetrated by breathtaking dystopian sounds. “Shining Star” is another highlight that is dedicated to the melodic Detroit sound without using a kick drum. The blissful “Relief” has a stunning melody and harmonies, while “Free Hugs” turns toward the pure beauty of sound. “The End” has a slightly tragical tone and closes a coherent and harmonic album.

Niklas Sivelöv – a professor at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen – is one of the leading pianists in the Nordic countries. He was born in Skellefteå in northern Sweden and began playing the organ at the age of six. When he was fourteen, he switched to the piano and studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm from the age of seventeen. He made his debut, playing Bartók’s Second Piano Concerto, in 1991, and since then the conductors he has worked with include Thomas Dausgaard, Alan Gilbert, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Leif Segerstam.

The 24 Caprices for solo Violin by Niccolò Paganini are a challenge for every violinist. They request virtuosity at the highest level and they are full of musical color and variety.
“I often bevailed that the caprices are not as very-well established in the concert life as they should, in my opinion”, says violinist Niklas Liepe. In order to change this, he started the “New Paganini Project”. Nikki Chooi was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and began his studies at age 9 at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, under the tutelage of Sydney Humphreys. He is a graduate of the Mount Royal Conservatory, received his undergraduate degree from the Curtis Institute of Music, and completed further studies at the Juilliard School with Ida Kavafian and Donald Weilerstein.
As First Prize Winner of the 2013 Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Nikki completed an extensive recital tour with Chamber Music New Zealand, performed as concerto soloist with Giordano Bellincampi and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and gave a recital as part of Australia’s Musica Viva Series.
