When I Get Home is the new album from Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter and visual artist Solange Knowles. This release represents the next phase in Solange’s evolution as an artist, and is the follow up to her critically acclaimed 2016 album A Seat at the Table. The album is an exploration of origin. It asks the question how much of ourselves do we bring with us versus leave behind in our evolution. The artist returned to Third Ward Houston to answer this. When I Get Home was written, performed, and executive produced by Solange, and includes contributions from Tyler, the Creator, Chassol, Playboi Carti, Standing on the Corner, Panda Bear, Devin the Dude, The-Dream, and more. It also features samples from Third Ward’s own Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad, poet Pat Parker, and Scarface.

SOILWORK has been around, in one form or another, for twenty years now. Some people say that they haven’t made anything worth listening to after “Steelbath Suicide”. Some have only heard “Stabbing The Drama. Some think “The Living Infinite”, the band’s 2013 double disc release, was quite epic. It’s all good. At this point in a band’s career, you can either choose the nostalgia route, playing old albums in their entirety, because that makes an easy package for promoters to sell. Verkligheten, the title of Soilwork’s latest offering, is the Swedish word for reality, the entity that we’re all trying to escape from. Verkligheten is their attempt to try and go somewhere else, to express all those things that are born in between hypnagogic states and frenzies of hyperrealism. SOILWORK is a band that has been through a lot. They don’t have to try and tidy things up by using clichés like personal and/or musical differences. It has been hell. They are not young anymore, and their reality these days is the hellhounds on their tails, the ghosts in their subconscious and the coldness of existence that starts eating at the soul the very day that you leave the womb. We can no longer escape the fact that we’re vulnerable to the shortcomings of life itself.

Soilwork – A Whisp of the Atlantic (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Neither a true EP (with a runtime of almost 37 minutes), nor a true album (with only 5 tracks), A Whisp of the Atlantic is nevertheless a major release from the Swedes of Soilwork. The outfit has chanced a rather risky venture, which has been the undoing of many competitors in the past: opening with a 16-minute fluid piece which gives the record its name. It’s a stunning move on the part of a quintet which has thus far not been quite so open about their progressive leanings. The track clearly bears the group’s imprints in various respects (their early death metal, the more melodic turn that the band took after 2002 with Natural Born Chaos). But it is clear that the singer Björn “Speed” Strid and guitarist David Andersson, also part of parallel classic rock project The Night Flight Orchestra, have had a considerable influence on the writing of this bravura piece: the piano and sax interventions seem to spring directly from them. But the great strength of this extraordinary composition is undoubtedly its great coherence, given the number of styles at work here: its quarter-hour-plus runtime passes shockingly quickly, and its end sneaks up on us as a surprise. It is a staggering achievement, which will surely be a landmark in the history of Soilwork. The four other songs that complete the tracklist are not neglected, either: all the material here deserves attention, but special mention must go to the two gems Feverish, which is as nasty as they come, and Death Diviner, a real hit with absolutely superb, clear vocal lines. While this kind of hybrid product is often intended to string fans along between “real” albums, A Whisp of the Atlantic is no mere tease. It outclasses some of the group’s recent releases and repositions Soilwork out in front of the pack of Scandinavian metal bands. Brilliant. – Charlélie Arnaud

SOHN – Tremors (2014) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

SOHN – Tremors (2014)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 41:14 minutes | 807 MB | Genre: Electronic

London-bred producer Sohn first emerged in 2012 with his immaculately composed track “The Wheel,” a song that glided effortlessly along on clouds of vocal samples, marrying daydreamy bliss with utter exhaustion as it patiently wandered its emotional arc. Debut album Tremors offers up track after track of similarly considered and meticulous sounds, capturing lonely and frustrated feelings that are often wrapped in, and ultimately redeemed by, gorgeous electronic backdrops. “The Wheel” shows up here as a kind of loose template, with lots of the album’s songs built on a minimal foundation of processed vocal samples and raw bass synth. These foundations are often overlayed with more glistening sound elements like the fluttering bell and acoustic guitar sounds of “Ransom Notes” that compete with a sea of muted vocal delays. The beats here range from the booming percussion-heavy lope of funkier track “Artifice” to more glacial and understated R&B hi-hat clicks on “Veto,” which recalls the indie take on quiet storm slow jams perfected by Sohn’s contemporaries Rhye and James Blake. The vocals, often pained to the point of despair, will remind many listeners of Blake’s style, though Sohn veers from Blake’s quavering falsetto, opting for an earthier, less delicate delivery. While there are undeniable similarities between Tremors and albums by Blake, Jamie Woon, and other producers from the soul chapter of dubstep’s evolution, Sohn stands out based on the total opulence of almost every track here. The feeling of complete immersion in a particular feeling is deeply palpable, with every song smacking of loss, searching, and helplessness. In the end, what keeps Tremors from drowning in its own paralyzed sadness is the feeling that Sohn himself has defeated these dark feelings through the painstaking process of crafting an album so beautiful.

Iconic Swedish duo Sally Shapiro’s 4th studio album is finally here. Sad Cities enters our atmosphere & we couldn’t be more excited to share it tonight.

15 years ago, their breakout debut 12” “Disco Romance” was released on Diskokaine by our dear friend Wolfram. No one was even close to doing what they were doing back then & the world quickly took notice. Two years later, Johan reached out to Johnny to remix Glass Candy’s After Dark classic “The Chameleon” & the two stayed in touch.

Emerging like a phoenix from a 5 year hiatus, the duo worked in deep seclusion & recorded a gorgeous bouquet of pure electronic bliss. Mixed by Johan Agebjörn & Johnny Jewel, the album includes features from Highway Superstar, Electric Youth, Tommy ’86 & our very own Jorja Chalmers.
