At 92, Vibist Terry Gibbs is still Jammin’! For an incredible eight decades now, feisty vibraphonist and jazz icon Terry Gibbs has demonstrated the sheer joy of performing. “Life is a gas!” he seems to be saying with his music. “Let’s do this!” In performance, he behaves like a exuberant fan of his own band, cheering his accompanists on, punctuating arrangements and solos with non-verbal interjections. His spirit was cultivated over the years, having played in significant jazz eras, with the formative giants of the genre, including Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie in bebop and “the King of Swing,” Benny Goodman. That same spirit is in abundance on Terry Gibbs 92 Years Young: Jammin’ at the Gibbs House, a collection of songs recorded live in Gibbs’ living room. All the tracks were done in a single take. Endings were discussed briefly or not at all. There was no rehearsal. This is old school, rare today, the kind of session sophisticated talents like Terry and not all that many others could tackle. Gibbs, accompanied by his son Gerry on drums, Mike Gurrola on bass, and John Campbell on piano, sparkles on vibes. His tone is impeccable and his energy belies his senior status. Gibbs’ decision to record one more performance, in a very long line of worthwhile recordings, is something to behold, celebrate and enjoy.

Tequila were one of Spain’s most popular and influential rock bands of the 1970s and ’80s, breaking down the doors for rock & roll in the post-Franco era and winning a massive following at home for their music, rooted in the classic style of Chuck Berry and the Rolling Stones. Tequila were formed in 1975 by a pair of Argentinian expatriates, lead singer Alejo Stivel and lead guitarist Ariel Rot. Teaming with three native Spaniards guitarist Julian Infante, bassist Felipe Lipe, and drummer Manolo Iglesias Tequila landed a record deal with Sony’s Spanish division after establishing themselves as a powerful live act, and their debut album, Matricula de Honor, was released in 1978. While Matricula de Honor sold well, their second LP, 1979’s Rock and Roll, became a major success, and they were cited as the first Spanish rock band to enjoy major commercial and critical success at home. Two more albums followed 1980’s Viva Tequila and 1981’s Confidencial but personal differences and drug abuse began tearing at the group, and in 1982, Tequila split up. Ariel Rot went on to a successful solo career as well as producing other artists, while Alejo Stivel would become a noted record producer and created several memorable commercial jingles. Julian Infante played with Ariel Rot in the band los Rodriguez in the ’90s; he died of AIDS-related illnesses in 2000, the same condition which claimed Manolo Iglesias in 1994. In 2008, Stivel and Rot staged a Tequila reunion tour with a handful of new musicians, though Felipe Lipe chose not participate.

Iconic Brazilian singer/composer Ivan Lins has written many MPB standards revered at home and abroad. American singers including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Barbra Streisand, Shirley Horn, and Blossom Dearie have recorded his songs. In 1980, Quincy Jones produced George Benson’s reading of “Love Dance,” and he cut “Velas” for The Dude in 1981. Vocalist Mark Murphy and Brazilian fusion trio Azymuth released Night Mood, a collection of Lins’ songs, in 1986. Composer/trumpeter Terence Blanchard collaborated with Lins on The Heart Speaks in 1995. In 2000, the tribute album A Love Affair included contributions from Sting and Chaka Khan. Resonance Records, whose founder George Klabin is a longtime fan, released Eddie Daniels’ star-studded Night Kisses: A Tribute to Ivan Lins in 2020. Klabin also commissioned My Heart Speaks. Lins chose this career-spanning program of well-known and obscure songs. He’s supported by the 91-member Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra and a jazz quartet (Josh Nelson, piano; Mauricio Zottarelli, drums and percussion; Carlitos Del Puerto, bass; Leo Amuedo, guitar). German composer/arranger Kuno Schmid wrote charts. Lins sings and gets alternating guest support from trumpeter Randy Brecker and vocalists Dianne Reeves, Tawanda, and Jane Monheit. The latter, an expert interpreter of Lins’ music, also contributes English lyrics to two songs. Set opener “Renata Maria” is a lush samba buoyed by fretless jazz bass, strings, winds, lithe piano, and organic percussion. Lins, though 78, retains elasticity and suppleness in his reedy, smooth tenor in relating the story of a siren-like goddess who drives a man mad. He also offers its mirror image in “E Isso Acontece” (a rare tune with self-penned lyrics), as love is lost and the protagonist moves on, grateful for the experience. The title track, sung by Reeves (with words by Monheit) contains an elegant intro by string and jazz quartets worthy of George Gershwin. Monheit’s reading of “Rio” near the album’s end bears her lyrics and indelible vocal signature in a gauzy reverie of the composer’s birthplace. Lins’ “I’m Not Alone” is sung by Tawanda with English lyrics by Will Jennings. Lins’ interpretations can be edifying. His “Congada Blues” finds him and Kana Shimanuki dueting in chants above a funky samba. “Corpos,” co-composed with longtime collaborator Vitor Martins, is a jazz waltz layered with syncopated percussion, slippery guitar, brass, reeds, and strings; Lins’ expansive, emotionally raw vocal poignantly addresses the plight of the “disappeared” during Brazil’s two-decade military rule. He has recorded the romantically desperate closer “Nada Sem Você” several times before, but never like this. Framed by delicate piano, strings, guitar, and brushed snare, the singer pleads for his beloved to remain, but she is already gone. My Heart Speaks also includes liner notes by James Gavin with extensive commentary by Lins. This late-career release is revelatory, as Lins gets inside his songs to impart emotional nuances hidden in both lyrics and music. The program is elegant and potent throughout, presenting Lins in a musical setting befitting his artistry. – Thom Jurek

Franco-Flemish composer Giaches de Wert wrote a considerable amount of sacred music during the late Renaissance, but little of it was published during his lifetime. Only three books of motets were released in 1566 and 1581. Stile Antico’s new album introduces us to another side of this composer who, though Flemish-born, spent most of his life in Italy, primarily in Mantua, where he was to remain for the rest of his life, though not without maintaining connections (both musical and, during the mid-late 1580s, romantic) with the court at Ferrara, where the lively musical life must have been a welcome distraction from his not-always-happy existence at the Mantuan court. The unique and dramatic style of these remarkable motets cannot fail to ravish explorers of this ‘divine theatre’.

We’re delighted to welcome Roeland Celis to Whirlwind Recordings to release The Vacuum with his sextet, Ping O.D. this Autumn.

Celis grew up in a musical family. His parents, both classically trained musicians, sent him to music school in his home town of Sint-Joris-Winge when he was eight years old. Later, he studied in New York at the Aaron Copland School of Music with support of the Belgian American Educational Foundation. Roeland’s approach on the guitar can be described as guitar-oriented, dynamic and fluid, merging influences from jazz and different rock-and pop-genres into his own unique voice. On September 15 2023 his sextet, Ping O.D., will release its debut album. This formation features NYC veteran alto saxophonist John O’Gallagher – heard on numerous Juno and Grammy nominated/winning recordings – combines elements from the rich jazz tradition with harder guitar genres like progressive metal as well as math rock.

With “Welcome To Dark Matter“ I am delighted to present music I have written especially to combine my contemporary Big Band, “The Globular Cluster“, my award-winning “Void Quintet“ and me, Ursula Reicher, as a solo singer and pianist.

The main topic of these compositions is death and how we deal with the dying of people who are close to us. Thusly I have created a 9-piece concept album, intended to take the listener on a journey of reflection regarding their own lives. The first 8 compositions are based of The Phases of Grief from death researcher, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. Track 9 is my arrangement of a Ben Harper song. On “Welcome To Dark Matter“

I want to shed light on my different musical influences. Therefore it will be no traditional Jazz-Big Band album, rather, elements from Classical-Music and Rock music, as well as influences from Darkpop and Electronic Music will also appear.

Prolific songwriter and guitar virtuoso David Tattersall presents 11 new songs on themes of memory, dreams, loneliness and love, featuring nylon-string guitar improvisations in the vein of gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt. The David Tattersall Group are old friends who rehearsed together for months in a small, smoky, sweaty room, before recording the album on a huge red boat moored on the River Thames, all vintage microphones and wooden walls inside. Friendship is a vital part of the record’s magic. Stylistic influences include Ronnie Lane, after whom one song is named, and the nylon-string guitar work of Jonathan Richman and Willie Nelson. A pastoral mood prevails, with swells of melancholic violin and Spaghetti Western harmonica, backed by honky-tonk piano and the dry drum sounds of Neil Young’s Harvest period, while the golden voice of Holly Holden adds a touch of glamour to proceedings. David’s process includes much musical improvisation and stream-of-consciousness writing, but his end goal is to couple classic songwriting with the collective chemistry of musicians playing live in the studio. His lyric influences include Tom Verlaine, John Cooper Clarke and the New York School of Poets, particularly James Schuyler.
