As Oliver Nelson is known primarily as a big band leader and arranger, he is lesser known as a saxophonist and organizer of small ensembles. Blues and the Abstract Truth is his triumph as a musician for the aspects of not only defining the sound of an era with his all-time classic “Stolen Moments,” but on this recording, assembling one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to form an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection. Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Roy Haynes (drums) can do no wrong as a rhythm section. “Stolen Moments” really needs no comments, as its undisputable beauty shines through in a three-part horn harmony fronting Hubbard’s lead melody. It’s a thing of beauty that is more timeless as the years pass. The “Blues” aspect is best heard on “Yearnin’,” a stylish, swinging, and swaying downhearted piece that is a bluesy as Evans would ever be. Both “Blues” and “Abstract Truth” combine for the darker “Teenie’s Blues,” a feature for Nelson and Dolphy’s alto saxes, Dolphy assertive in stepping forth with his distinctive, angular, dramatic, fractured, brittle voice that marks him a maverick. Then there’s “Hoedown,” which has always been the black sheep of this collection with its country flavor and stereo separated upper and lower horn in snappy call-and-response barking. As surging and searing hard boppers respectively, “Cascades” and “Butch & Butch” again remind you of the era of the early ’60s when this music was king, and why Hubbard was so revered as a young master of the idiom. A must buy for all jazz fans, and a Top Ten or Top Fifty favorite for many.

Although Dolphy is too unique and skilled to be overshadowed in a setting such as this, Nelson holds his own. He contributed five of the six compositions (including “Screamin’ the Blues,” “The Meetin’,” and “Alto-Itis”) and effectively matches wits and creative ideas with Dolphy. This edition is a part of the ultimate audiophile Prestige Stereo reissues from Analogue Productions — 25 of the most collectible, rarest, most audiophile-sounding Rudy Van Gelder recordings ever made.

Hailing from Beckenham, Kent, England and now living in Munich, Germany, jazz vocalist Jenny Evans has achieved a great deal. She once graduated from the university with an M.A. in linguistics, has run her own jazz club, worked as a lyricist and an actress, took part in countless radio and television productions, was a featured singer in stage musicals and has given concerts all over the world. While experienced also in trad jazz, R’n’B and pop, Jenny Evans has been making a name for herself as an irresistibly charming swing vocalist in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Anita O’Day. Yet following the big success of her last album “Gonna Go Fishin'”, the time came for her to think about her own identity and remember her European roots. An educated choral singer (whose first love was the contrapuntal motets of Orlando di Lasso) and former piano student of Trevor Pinnock, Jenny Evans pays homage to the European legacy on her new album “Nuages.”

On her third CD for Channel Classics, the harpist Lavinia Meijer (28) has brought together popular Fantasies and Impromptus by Spohr, Fauré, Pierné, Saint-Saëns, Roussel and Glière. Added to these are world premieres on CD of two completely forgotten harpist composers: Johannes Snoer (1868-1936) and Gabriel Verdalle (1845-1912).

On her first and very successful CD for Channel Classics, ‘Divertissements’, Lavinia Meijer also recorded only compositions originally written for the harp, with works by Carlos Salzedo, André Caplet and Jacques Ibert. On her highly commended CD ‘Visions’ she presented twentieth-century repertoire, with works by Byrnes, Isang Yun and Takemitsu, in addition to Britten and Patterson.

Lavinia Meijer graduated cum laude at the Amsterdam Conservatory in 2005. She was awarded the Netherlands Music Prize in 2009. (more…)

Once the least performed and recorded of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies, due mostly to its taxing length, the Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” in C minor now appears with some regularity on disc and with increasing frequency on SACDs. This recording from Exton, featuring Zdenek Mácal and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, is remarkable for its spacious sound, close-up details, and wide-frequency range, and the interpretation is on a par with many other first-rate performances, so finding points of distinction between them is perhaps a futile endeavor, especially since only aficionados of this work will detect them. Mácal is certainly attuned to Mahler’s extreme mood swings and a unique mix of innocent reverence and sardonic parody, and there is nothing lacking in the CPO’s brilliant execution of the score, which displays many extended techniques and an extraordinary palette of tone colors.

Keyboardist Will Boulware and company strike again with another dose of to-die-for contemporary jazz. His first Eighty-Eight’s label effort, “Over Crystal Green”, won Swing Journal’s Golden Disk award and helped to launch a label that has now received extensive acclaim from jazz and audiophile press. Boulware pulls out some heavy artillery on “Harmony”, including a very special appearance by Phoebe Snow, who sings on three tracks. Will & Rainbow is rounded out by Peter Bernstein on guitar, Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone, Philippe Saisse on synthesizers, Steve Gadd on drums, and Anthony Jackson on bass.

Tale Spinnin’ is the fifth studio album by Weather Report, recorded and released in 1975, featuring the addition of Leon “Ndugu” Chancler on the drums. Ndugu was recruited after Josef Zawinul heard him play with Carlos Santana. Weather Report was recording next door to Ndugu in the studio, and Chancler was asked to join them for a recording session. That session ended up lasting a week and produced Tale Spinnin’. After the record, Ndugu was asked to join the band as a permanent member, but declined in favor of continuing to work with Carlos Santana.

Night Passage is the eleventh album by Weather Report, released in 1980. The tracks were recorded in August 1980 at The Complex studios in Los Angeles (before a crowd of 250 people who can be heard on a couple of tracks), except for “Madagascar”, recorded live in Osaka, in June of the same year. The album introduces a new member to the band, percussionist Robert Thomas Jr. Night Passage loses the over-done production layers of some of Weather Report’s earlier releases (most notably 1978’s Mr. Gone). What is lost in layers of overdubs is made up in solo improvisation in the classic jazz tradition.
