Saxophonist Archie Shepp is best known for his passionately Afrocentric music of the late 1960s, His tenor sax solos were searing, harsh, and unrelenting, played with a vivid intensity while he was viewed as perhaps the most articulate and disturbing member of the free generation. On this album he performs with the avant-garde jazz ensemble The New York Contemporary Five, “a group which, despite its short lease on life, has considerable historical significance”, laying “the cornerstone of what might be called the mainstream of free jazz”.

A possible breakout album for Anthony Wilson, this organ trio with the superb Larry Goldings on B3 features two of the finest drummers working today – half the tunes are with the swinging Jeff Hamilton on drums and the rest session drummer par excellence Jim Keltner who lays down some truly great percussion. Aside from Wilson’s exploration of Latin, south of the border influences, the recording features unique performances of music by Ellington, Hawkins, Jerry Goldsmith and Van Dyke Parks.

The recording took place in Oceanway Studio A on an ATR100 with a new Flux Magnetics Headstack, direct to 2-track. The company work their way through a mix of standards from Ellington and others including a superb 8-minute version of the “Love Theme” from Jerry Goldsmith’s brilliant soundtrack to the film “Chinatown” and a handful of original tunes.

Art Of Noise – Reconstructed… For Your Listening Pleasure (2003)
PS3 Rip | ISO | SACD DSD/DST64 2.0 & 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 1:18:55 minutes | Scans included | 4,29 GB
Genre: Modern Classical, Downtempo, Experimental | Recorded: September 1999, March 2000 and June 2002

Trevor Horn has done it again: Inventive and great sounding multichannel mix (Dan Vickers is credited for the 5.1 mix), which you can use to impress your friends and to demonstrate the superior sound of SACD. There are several great moments on this disc, especially the beginning of “Moments in Love”, “Beat Box” or “Peter Gunn”. Your jaws are dropped, but unfortunately this does not always last throughout the whole track. An annoying singing voice or speeding up of the track does not sit well – maybe too inventive or ambitious at times? And there are definetely better tracks from AON, than selected here for this disc. Seeing (and hearing) what can be done with modern sound technology and talent, leaves you wishing for multichannel mixes of other AON masterpieces – for example a serious “reconstruction” of the great “The Best of Art of Noise – Art Works 12” CD from 1988 would be a perfect start.

Daft is a compilation collecting the Art of Noise LP Who’s Afraid of the Art Of Noise? (with one track, “Snapshot”, appearing in a longer version than on the original UK LP, but previously released on the Japanese version), along with portions of the Into Battle with the Art of Noise EP and “Moments in Love” remix single. It gives a fairly thorough overview of the Trevor Horn period of the group, prior to its split from the ZTT label. In 2003 the album was re-released on Super Audio CD.

PS3 Rip | ISO | SACD DSD64 2.0 & 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | Scans included | 4,09 GB
Genre: Electronica | Style: Leftfield, Synth-pop, Experimental

I think I own about every version of this album that was ever released, from the first Art of Noise EP “Into battle” (featured almost completely on “Daft”) which I bought on vinyl when it came out till the 20th anniversary CD on Repertoire that came with a DVD with some of AON’s groundbreaking videos early 2004.
“Daft” is my 2nd SACD and although I thought I knew every little “boing”, “duh” and other sound effect on the album, it surprised me what a difference the additional channels make. The music is litteraly all around you, the effects come from everywhere and if you close your eyes the album is like a roller coaster ride.
“Close (to the Edit)” and “Beat Box” are still the stand-out tracks, “Moments in Love” is still the only AON track in the entire AON catalogue that sounds outdated, but what a wonderful edition the SACD version is.
Blessed are the noisemakers. sa-cd.net

Anneleen Lenaerts – Chopin & Liszt (2015) DSF DSD64 + Hi-Res FLAC

Anneleen Lenarts is already one of our foremost young European harpists. All of her harp renditions were revelatory in their lucid clarity and tonal allure.

The Liszt pieces have technically daunting virtuosic sections, particularly in cadenzas. Lenarts tackles all these difficulties as though they didn’t exist, with fluency and natural ease which is breathtaking. Even the tricky Liszt concert study ‘Waldesrauchen’ (Forest Murmurs) comes off as if written for the harp, with a delicacy of touch in the passage work which is magically sprite-like.
That old warhorse “Liebestraume” comes newly minted, being given narrative flow which is usually neglected. Led by Lenart’s dynamically shaded singing tone to a spectacular climax with scintillating fireworks in the fizzing cadenza, this is an interpretation to treasure. The carefully chosen Chopin works too are a wonder, from the passionate and wayward early Polonaise Op.26 no. 1, to a fragrantly perfumed Nocturne Op.9 no.1 and a simply superb rendition of Chopin’s finest nocturne, Op.48 no 1 in C minor, which is as good as any I have heard from the great piano masters.

Another hoary old Chopin piece, the Fantasie-Impromptu in C# minor, is presented as if new. The speed and clarity of articulation in the whirling notes would make any pianist green with envy, and the dramatic ebb and flow of the piece are superbly realized, with the full rich sonority of the harp brought into play at climaxes. I was left feeling that I might well prefer her harp version over the usual piano ones.

Anneleen Lenarts shines new light on the two featured composers with her compellingly idiomatic arrangements and spontaneous musical communication which goes from her nimble fingers (and feet!) straight through to the listener’s heart. This disc held me spell-bound, and I would love to hear some more from Anneleen Lenaerts; she is, without doubt, a musical enchantress. Enthusiastically recommended. 5-Stars for Performance, Stereo, and Multichannel DSD Sonics.

Featured are Arne Domnerus (doubling on alto and clarinet), pianist Bengt Hallberg, vibraphonist Lars Erstrand, bassist Georg Riedel and drummer Egil Johansen. They mostly stick to swing standards, recalling the groups of Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton…

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the finest jazz audiophile albums ever made, JAZZ AT THE PAWNSHOP has been transferred to the finest available digital audio format – SACD. For the first time, the complete and legendary recordings are collected in a three disc release with full documentation and photos. Originally recorded in Stockholm in December 1976 by famed recording engineer Gert Palmcrantz, Jazz at the Pawnshop featured revolutionary audio recording techniques and jazz improvisation at its very best. The group, performing in the Pawnshop jazz club, was led by alto saxophone player Arne Domnérus, who was once described by Charlie Parker as “a very good player, almost as good as me.” Pianist Bengt Hallberg had impressed Stan Getz when moving through the strangest of keys without any effort, and the rhythm section of bass player Georg Riedel and drummer Egil Johansen was the greatest in Sweden at the time. The music swings and cooks through well-known and loved songs such as “In a Mellow Tone,” “Mood Indigo,” “High Life,” “Take Five” and a string of other jazz favorites. If you’re looking for the definitive issue of one of the critically-acclaimed audiophile albums in history – here it is. Treat yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience.
