B.B. King was 77 years old when Reflections was released, which perhaps entitled him to reflect back on the song standards the album contained. Despite advancing age, King had already been unusually busy on the recording front for a septuagenarian, turning out the gold-selling duets album Deuces Wild in 1997, Blues on the Bayou in 1998, Let the Good Times Roll: The Music of Louis Jordan in 1999, the double-platinum Riding With the King with Eric Clapton and Makin’ Love Is Good for You in 2000, and the seasonal recording A Christmas Celebration of Hope in 2002. For Reflections, he again worked with Simon Climie, who produced Riding With the King, and collaborated with a session band including such notables as Joe Sample, Nathan East, and Doyle Bramhall II. The songs ranged from pop evergreens like “I’ll String Along With You” and “For Sentimental Reasons” to blues favorites such as Lonnie Johnson’s “Tomorrow Night,” with oddities like “Always on My Mind” thrown in and even a couple of remakes of the earlier King songs “Word of Honor” and “Neighborhood Affair.” The arrangements, which included horn and string parts, left room for King’s distinctive blues guitar work, but really supported his always expressive voice. The result was a confident, easygoing album that stylistically could have been made in 1953 as easily as 2003. Blues purists and aficionados of blues guitar would find it only partially satisfying, but it reflected the breadth of musical taste of an artist who always played the blues but never restricted himself only to blues music or blues fans.

B.B. King is not only a timeless singer and guitarist, he’s also a natural-born entertainer, and on Live at the Regal the listener is treated to an exhibition of all three of his talents. Over percolating horn hits and rolling shuffles, King treats an enthusiastic audience (at some points, they shriek after he delivers each line) to a collection of some of his greatest hits. The backing band is razor-sharp, picking up the leader’s cues with almost telepathic accuracy. King’s voice is rarely in this fine of form, shifting effortlessly between his falsetto and his regular range, hitting the microphone hard for gritty emphasis and backing off in moments of almost intimate tenderness. Nowhere is this more evident than at the climax of “How Blue Can You Get,” where the Chicago venue threatens to explode at King’s prompting. Of course, the master’s guitar is all over this record, and his playing here is among the best in his long career. Displaying a jazz sensibility, King’s lines are sophisticated without losing their grit. More than anything else, Live at the Regal is a textbook example of how to set up a live performance. Talking to the crowd, setting up the tunes with a vignette, King is the consummate entertainer. Live at the Regal is an absolutely necessary acquisition for fans of B.B. King or blues music in general. A high point, perhaps even the high point, for uptown blues.

B.B. King & Eric Clapton – Riding With The King (2000) [Audio Fidelity 2015] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

B.B. King & Eric Clapton – Riding With The King (2000) [Audio Fidelity 2015]

Mastered for SACD by Steve Hoffman | Audio Fidelity # AFZ-211 | Genre: Rock

The potential for a collaboration between B.B. King and Eric Clapton is enormous, of course, and the real questions concern how it is organized and executed. This first recorded pairing between the 74-year-old King and the 55-year-old Clapton was put together in the most obvious way: Clapton arranged the session using many of his regular musicians, picked the songs, and co-produced with his partner Simon Climie. That ought to mean that King would be a virtual guest star rather than earning a co-billing, but because of Clapton’s respect for his elder, it nearly works the other way around. The set list includes lots of King specialties — “Ten Long Years,” “Three O’Clock Blues,” “Days of Old,” “When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer” — as well as standards like “Hold on I’m Coming” and “Come Rain or Come Shine,” with some specially written and appropriate recent material thrown in, so King has reason to be comfortable without being complacent. The real danger is that Clapton will defer too much; though he can be inspired by a competing guitarist such as Duane Allman, he has sometimes tended to lean too heavily on accompanists such as Albert Lee and Mark Knopfler when working with them in concert. That danger is partially realized; as its title indicates, Riding With the King is more about King than it is about Clapton. But the two players turn out to have sufficiently complementary, if distinct, styles so that Clapton’s supportive role fills out and surrounds King’s stinging single-string playing. (It’s also worth noting that there are usually another two or three guitarists on each track.) The result is an effective, if never really stunning, work.

or FLAC(converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | Front/Rear Covers | 846 MB
Genre: Folk, R&B, Soul

A name like B.B. Driftwood might lead you to assume that the bearer is a good old Southern bluesman, and this SACD’s title wouldn’t change that impression. But Driftwood, whose real name is Bengt Skoghoft, is about as far from the Southern US as could be. Yet, listening to Southward Bound, one hears echoes of the South and the style of another Opus 3 artist, Eric Bibb – not a bad starting point. But Driftwood is definitely his own man. He wrote all the songs on this album, and unlike Bibb he adds a slight rock ‘n’ roll edge to his basic blues base. He also throws in a dash of gospel, country, and R&B. Along with the catchy tunes, these help keep the music fresh and interesting.

Female-fronted symphonic/goth metal band Xandria broke into the German music mainstream in 2004 with their second album, Ravenheart. Though many argue that the band isn’t genuinely metal, Xandria garnered a sizable following in Germany and a growing following internationally; in particular, the band’s flair for exotic themes and Middle Eastern motifs contributed to its appeal, as did its English-language lyrics.

debut with this EMI disc Romance de Amor. The program consists of the usual classical guitar bonbons mixed in with popular numbers mixed in — the tango “La Cumparsita” and the Beatles’ “Michelle” and Paul Simon’s version of “El Condor Pasa” for example, and a couple of traditional Chinese songs, as well. The program, in and of itself, is not that interesting, but it doesn’t matter. Xue Fei Yang is an incredible guitarist — technically top drawer, warmly expressive in sound, and mind-bogglingly facile in her digital dexterity. Just listen to the attack on Rodrigo’s Zapateado; she is able to vary her touch on the strings with lightning speed and pinpoint accuracy.

The French word ‘suite’ was quickly adopted throughout the European continent. The primary meaning (‘set, sequence’) has been preserved in widely diverse contexts – in ceremonial or court vocabulary (a group of attendants accompanying an important personage), and as an architectural term (an enfilade or series of rooms). But perhaps the word gained most currency in the world of music. As we know, the suite is a favoured cyclical form of baroque instrumental music, representing a series of dance-based pieces that are complementary in the type of movement and unified by a single key (and initially, by the common melodic source).

Nowadays many performers want to play music written for piano on the harpsichord. I began my conversation with Olga Martynova by asking what first gave her the idea. It all began a few years ago. I was curious to know how music written for another instrument would sound when played on the harpsichord. I knew that Shostakovich and Prokofiev had been played on the harpsichord but had never listened to any recordings, maybe as a conscious decision. True, I have heard contemporary music written for harpsichord, but I find it sometimes even harder to play than other compositions that were never originally intended for the instrument.

He was considered to be one of the best harpsichordists of his time and he was famous for making well known and spread- ing the art of ornamentation in Germany as well as a perfect per- forming style on this instrument.

That is the estimation Ernst Ludwig Gerber gave in his Historisch-biographisches Lexicon der Tonkünstler to Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer (1656–1746), a composer and Kapellmeister to the Baden court.

His talent was rated extraordinarily high by his contempo- raries; Mauritius Vogt in the Conclave thesauri magnae artis musicae (published in Prague, 1719) called him ‘the most per- fect composer of our era’ (‘nostri aevi componista absolutis- simus’). It is known that J. S. Bach kept copies of Fischer’s com- positions and that this music was a source of inspiration for him. Modern research regards Fischer as a great composer of key- board music, on a par with Froberger and Bach. Furthermore, he is written about as a musician who in German speaking countries was able to elucidate the peculiarities of the French style.

When we speak about music, baroque means more than the age of figured bass and stile concertato. Today, as never before, there is a growing awareness that it is also the era of transcriptions and arrangements, which are just as indicative of the face of the age as are any innovations in the sphere of musical composition.
In those far off times, the public’s attitude to their favorite works of art was quite different to what it is today. It would never occur to anyone then to jealously guard from interference — as if it were sacred — each note of a generally recognized masterpiece. If a composition was popular it should be played as often as possible, in different transcriptions and arrangements. No musician would miss the opportunity of re-arranging a work, that had caught the public’s fancy, for different players: for the leading court soloists, for his friends and pupils, or even for musicians who were quite unknown to him — professionals and wealthy amateurs (willing to spend a fair sum of money on the acquisition of sheet music for a piece they liked). And even the duties of court music director or leader of a church choir were inconceivable without the constant re-working of their own pieces — for yet another holiday or some other ceremonial occasion.

Supposedly Johann Sebastian Bach was a strict father who used a quotation from the poet Gellert to describe his youngest offspring: ‘He will go far guided by his stupidity!’ Even if the story is true, the elder Bach was undoubtedly speaking in jest: his youngest son was his favourite. And he certainly did go far. Incidentally, he lost his father when he was only 15, and few people have learned wisdom by that age.

‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is the traditional English bridal rhyme, ending with and a silver sixpence in her shoe. Five little things, often pieces of clothes, small presents or even heirlooms to bring good luck to the bride. Something old stands for tradition and family, something new for a hopeful future and forthcoming happiness, something borrowed reminds the bride of all her friends, always ready to advise and assist, and something blue symbolises the love and fidelity of the new couple. And finally a silver sixpence to bring wealth.
