FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 35:40 minutes | 404 MB | Genre: Contemporary Jazz, Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Microscopi

Dani Bošnjak discovered his medium of expression at the age of seven. He started playing the flute in 1972 and precisely twenty-two years later, upon receiving the MA from the Academy of Music in Zagreb his official education cycle came to an end. However, his unofficial education continued. His studies took him further – to the exploration of early instruments and other types of flute from the woodwind group which made him a traverso and dolce flute instrumentalist. His interest in early music resulted in his engagement with the Croatian Baroque Ensemble, known for its historically knowledgeable performances, and with the Responzorium Ensemble that specializes in performing the 15th- and 16th-century music on historically authentic instruments. Bošnjak is a member of the Zagreb Philharmonic and a permanent associate of several renowned ensembles, such as the Varaždin Chamber Orchestra, Croatian Chamber Orchestra, Zagreb Opera section, although he particularly boasts of his membership in the Zagreb Wind Orchestra which makes the core of the Cantus Ensemble, an institution promoting Croatian contemporary music. The versatility of Dani Bošnjak can be seen in his focus on both early and contemporary music, which led him to further explore the area of jazz and Latino music, and made him a member of the Acoustic Project, the only crossover band of this type in Croatia.

D’Angelo and The Vanguard’s highly anticipated and much buzzed about brand new album, Black Messiah. Nearly 15 years in the making, Black Messiah contains 12 tracks of timeless music with poignant and provocative lyrics that requires repeat listening at maximum volume! On the album, D’Angelo is joined by his band, The Vanguard, alongside Pino Palladino, James Gadson and Questlove on various tracks on the album. All lyrics were written by D’Angelo in addition to Q-Tip and Kendra Foster who both wrote lyrics on several songs.

D’Angelo had this to say about Black Messiah in the album’s forward: “‘Black Messiah’ is a hell of a name for an album. It can be easily misunderstood. Many will think it’s about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I’m calling myself a Black Messiah. For me the title is about all of us. It’s about the world. It’s about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah. It’s about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and everyplace where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen. It’s not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are) but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape where these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It’s a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.”

They have named their programme “Nostalgia and Revolution”, a title that applies to all three composers who, in a twofold manner, both mirrored and shaped their times. Dana Zemtsov – Silhouettes (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 01:11:40 minutes | 2,30 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Channel Classics Records

The young violist Dana Zemtsov is a versatile player who has recorded music of her native Mexico as well as from various European traditions. Here, she and pianist Anna Fedorova weave English, Dutch, French, and Romanian pieces into an evocative sequence in which all the music falls generally into the French sphere and is informed by the inimitable way the French have with nostalgia. Debussy is represented in venerable transcriptions, and much of the music derives from the retrospective strands of his personality. The program opens with the Viola Sonata of Rebecca Clarke, influenced by the Violin Sonata in G minor of Debussy but a more tense and exacting work. It receives a precise performance here, but the real fun begins when Zemtsov relaxes into some more purely neoclassic works. There is a fine sonata by the little-known composer Arne Werkman and a lovely rendition of George Enescu’s Concert Piece for viola and piano. However, the real highlight is the fairly obscure Viola Sonata No. 1, Op. 240, of Milhaud, written during World War II but redolent of the gentle hillsides of California, to which the composer fled. The work brings out Zemtsov’s best quality: her remarkable way with lyrical melodies, which are abundant in this work. The whole thing is highly listenable in music that’s generally unfamiliar, except for the Debussy, and it’s beautifully recorded.

One of the biggest dilemmas of our generation is where are we from, who are we, what is our identity? Globalization has made the whole world closer, bringing our cultures more and more together. I myself am a product of this mix, being born in Mexico to Russian parents with a Jewish background, having studied at a French school in Norway and grown up in Holland. Consequently I have often thought about these questions: which culture is closest to me? What am I? I could feel at home and relate to all these cultures and yet I am not really part of any of them.

The road has led Dana Fuchs everywhere. But when it came to choosing a location for her version of Ruf Records’ now highly anticipated live double set, Songs From The Road, it had to be New York. The singer and the city have history. Almost two decades have passed since Dana left her home in rural Florida and beat a path to the Big Apple. Stepping onto the mean streets of the Lower East Side at age 19, she was an unknown singer with a voice and a dream, ready to slug it out on the city’s jam-circuit.

The music of drummer/composer Dan Weiss always exceeds expectations. No matter the musical situation, he tends to push the boundaries of genre, ensemble sound and expectations. The title of his new trio recording, Utica Box, is a fitting conflagration of a barbaric psychiatric treatment, the Utica crib, and Weiss’s tendency to write and perform music that is outside the box.

Natural Selection is the highly-anticipated follow-up to drummer/composer Dan Weiss’s 2018 release Starebaby, an unconventional compounding of doom metal, electronic music, and improvisation into a dark and mystic brew. That album was named to many best-of 2018 lists, including Rolling Stone, which described it as “an album that creates its own sonic cinematic reality,” while NPR called it “Astonishing… A true convergence of heavy trudge and spontaneous combustion.” As with Starebaby, the new album is deeply inspired by the 2017 return of David Lynch’s television show Twin Peaks, whose dreamlike, foreboding feel pervades much of this music. The entire group – comprised of a dream-team of musicians who share a love for heavy metal and whose playing is unbound by genre – returns from the first album: Ben Monder (who plays on David Bowie’s Blackstar) on guitar, Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Melvins, Secret Chiefs 3) on bass, and the twin-keyboard/piano/electronics attack of the exceptionally creative Matt Mitchell and Craig Taborn. The recording of Natural Selection came fast at the end of a run of performances for the band, which helped further cement the group’s unique sound. It’s staggering to contemplate the wide-ranging ability of these musicians: from bone-crunching power to pensive reflection; exacting hits to improvised texture; faith to the compositions and manic improvisation, all played with imagination and conviction.
