Released as part of the Acoustic Sounds Series celebrating 70 years of Contemporary Records, Shelly Manne & Friends’ My Fair Lady is the first album to ever consist of jazz versions of songs from just a single Broadway musical. First released in 1956 and recorded by legendary engineer Roy DuNann, this new edition features remastered audio from the original tapes.
My Fair Lady, recorded by “Shelly Manne & His Friends,” was released in 1956 by Contemporary Records. Shelly Manne and his Friends bassist Leroy Vinnegar and the once and future classical pianist André Previn had recorded a trio album before this one (Shelly Manne and Friends) but My Fair Lady was the first and biggest-selling of the jazz versions of Broadway shows, TV themes, and film soundtracks later recorded by the trio. It remains a true classic to this day. Tracks include “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Your Face,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” and “I Could Have Danced All Night.”

The collection opens with Derek Bermel’s Pequenas Memórias (“Small memories” in Portuguese), a work dedicated to his wife Andreia Pinto Correia’s immigrant experience as well as a reference to the great writer José Saramago’s memoir. Evoking his wife’s artistic trajectory and how living in her adopted country shaped her path, Bermel weaves in stylistic references to Bach, Chopin, Ellington, and the Beatles. An accumulating melodic figure in the right hand is embellished by jazz-inflected grace notes over a chromatic descending bass. The immigrant’s identity, represented by the core melodic idea, is subjected to the vicissitudes of this often chaotic country of ours, at times open to those born elsewhere and at others relentlessly inhospitable.

“Mare Undarum means “the sea of waves”, the name given to a lunar pool. The title is also a reference to the artist’s first name, Sélène, who was the goddess of the full moon in Greek mythology.
This is an autobiographical album. ” I associate it with lunar craters and given moments of my life. A crater constitutes a physical impact and certain moments of our existence act like that too. These events trigger sounds, notes, vibrations, images and words deep inside.”
The album combines six original compositions by Sélène Saint-Aimé with three “re-compositions” of works by Steve Coleman, Villa Lobos and Mussorgsky.

At the latest since the Grammy Awards in 2015 as well as the subsequent Brit Awards, Sam Smith has been able to establish himself as one of the most striking, independent and successful singers of our time. Worldwide hits, first as a featured artist for Disclosure and Naughty Boy, and subsequently as a solo artist with his album debut “In The Lonely Hour” made him a mega star in 2014. However, until now unknown is the fact that Sam Smith has already recorded a full studio album before his award-winning masterpiece “In The Lonely Hour”.
