Louis Armstrong’s counterpart at the piano was Earl Hines (1903), one of the few early heroes of jazz who was not born in Louisiana (he was born in Pennsylvania and in 1924 moved to Chicago). His technique augmented delicate virtuoso Armstrong-style moves with a rhythmic exuberance that set him apart from the tradition of Jelly Roll Morton. He was basically trying to play the piano like a trumpet or even a trombone.

Early big band leader and swing pianist, Earl Hines set the standard for the history of jazz piano to come. His highly rhythmic approach yet, melody-centric solos brought together some of the most important elements of jazz music, as can be heard on these beautiful solo renditions of standards such as Come Rain or Come Shine, Over the Rainbow and I’ve Got the World on a String.

Once called “the first modern jazz pianist,” Earl Hines differed from the stride pianists of the 1920s by breaking up the stride rhythms with unusual accents from his left hand. While his right hand often played octaves so as to ring clearly over ensembles, Hines had the trickiest left hand in the business, often suspending time recklessly but without ever losing the beat. One of the all-time great pianists, Hines was a major influence on Teddy Wilson, Jess Stacy, Joe Sullivan, Nat King Cole, and even to an extent on Art Tatum. He was also an underrated composer responsible for “Rosetta,” “My Monday Date,” and “You Can Depend on Me,” among others.

Earl Hines’ improvisational style helped shape jazz. His Hot Five sides with Louis Armstrong are historic masterpieces, and the Armstrong-Hines duo “Weather Bird” is one of jazz’s high-watermarks. He went on to lead the first be-bop big band with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker as band members. Hines kept up with the times throughout his career, absorbing and assimilating every new style. Here Hines flows from Dixie to stride and swing, from rocking rhythm and blues to free-wheeling contemporary. Singer Marva Josie shines as the quintet plays the rhythm & blues standard I Just Wanna Make Love to You, as well as I Feel so Smoochy, Hines’ Night In Trinidad and the Cole Porter classic Easy To Love. The Hines originals Second Balcony Jump and Cannery Walk are tasty trio pieces. Ellington classics Passion Flower and Things Ain’t What They Used To Be, as well as All Of Me and Hines’ own Melodica Blues are instrumental quartet pieces featuring Haywood Henry’s polished clarinet and baritone play. All Of Me, My Heart Stood Still and Somebody Loves Me are solo exhibitions of Hines’ depth and breadth as he plays through jazz history. A necessary addition to any ‘Fatha’ Hines collection, and for those not familiar with the man and his music, a good introduction to one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century

Earl Hines is accompanied by Ralph Carmichael’s orchestra as he revisits a dozen standards and originals which he had recorded earlier in his career. In spite of the liner-note praise from both Nat King Cole and Stan Kenton (both of whom were also Capitol artists at the time), Carmichael’s rather bland, unadventurous arrangements do not seem to inspire Hines very much, as his playing takes on a conservative, easy listening sound that isn’t generally associated with him. Hines is in full steam tackling his landmark composition “Rosetta” and shows off a taste of his tremendous chops in “Little Girl,” but these tracks ends up being the exception rather than the rule. The music is pleasant for background listening, but serious fans of Earl Hines are advised to get the pianist’s own big band recordings or his solo and small-group dates as a leader, as these 1963 sessions for Capitol will doubtlessly disappoint most jazz fans.

He was one of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano and, according to one source, “one of a small number of pianists whose playing shaped the history of jazz”.

The EAGLES OF DEATH METAL honor us in 2021 with their very own version of a Christmas album, which will be released in the form of “A Boots Electric Christmas”.

Hughes puts his signature aural alter-ego Boots Electric stamp on a half-dozen electrified interpretations of perennial holiday classics that include “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Put A Little Love In Your Heart,” “O Holy Night,” “Little Drummer Boy,” and “Little Town Of Bethlehem.” The sonic highlight rounding out the EP is an extraordinary, and quite stirring, a cappella rendition of “O Holy Night” featuring Hughes and EODM bandmate Joshua Homme on vocals.

“Just a few songs to warm your heart during Christmas time. I hope you like them. May Christmas bring peace to you all. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, I love you, and God bless you all.” Hughes said of this new, winter-wonderful holiday EP.

Live Concert Film Capture Definitive, 26-Song Performance Recorded at the Fabulous Forum in September 2018 Featuring First Eagles’ Recordings with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey. LIVE FROM THE FORUM MMXVIII, a Scheme Engine production directed by Nick Wickham, was filmed on 14 4K cameras. The set captures definitive live performances of the band’s most iconic hits (“Hotel California,” “Take It Easy,” “Life In The Fast Lane,” “Desperado”) and beloved album tracks (“Ol’ 55, “Those Shoes”), along with some of the individual members’ biggest solo smashes (Henley’s “Boys Of Summer,” Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way,” and Gill’s “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away”).

Eagles: Live from the Forum MMXVIII is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Rhino Entertainment with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.34:1. While detail levels are generally good throughout this presentation, this is one of the darkest live concerts I’ve seen recently, just from a standpoint of stage lighting. The band is frequently bathed in deep blues which tend to deflate fine detail considerably, and a couple of moments that are lit in deep red tones come very close to posterizing. Otherwise, though, there is a good accounting of the players and audience, with above average fine detail levels in close-ups.

Eagles: Live from the Forum MMXVIII features DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and LPCM 2.0 tracks, though like a lot of concert video releases on Blu-ray, the disc has been authored to default to the stereo track. While both tracks offer sterling fidelity, the surround track significantly opens things up from the get go, even with regard to the brief shot of a jet flying overhead during some establishing shots. The soundstage is nicely wide but still focused on the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, and the vocals are to my ears mixed perfectly.

The Eagles’ Hotel California was a critical and commercial phenomenon when it was released in December 1976. The album topped the Billboard charts for eight weeks in the U.S., won two GRAMMY® Awards, sold more than 32 million copies around the world, and featured two Billboard #1 hit singles. 40 years later, it still ranks as one of the best-selling albums of all time.
The set also marks the debut of ten live tracks that were recorded during the band’s three-night stand at the Los Angeles Forum in October 1976. The concert recordings — which were recorded about a month before the album came out — feature one of the first ever live performances of “Hotel California” and “New Kid In Town” along with other Eagles classics including  “Already Gone,” “Take It To the Limit,” and “Witchy Woman.”
The Eagles made their triumphant return to the stage this summer at the Classic East/West festivals, earning raves from critics and fans alike. More live dates are planned for this fall, with the band being joined on stage once again by country superstar Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, son of Eagles founder, Glenn Frey.

The album contains a selection of songs from the Eagles’ first four albums released in the period from the Eagles’ formation in 1971 up to 1975.
