We have known for a long time the versatility of Francesco Tristano and his blessed inability to choose between electro and early music. From album to album, the Luxembourg pianist builds a unique and enchanting discography that blurs the lines between genres and eras, where we come across both Jean-Sébastien Bach and Derrick May. With On Early Music, Tristano pays homage to the great English masters of the Virginalist period, a pivotal moment between the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque era. Alongside works by John Bull, Peter Philips, Orlando Gibbons and John Bull, there are two compositions by the Italian Frescobaldi, to whom Tristano had already devoted the very beautiful disc Frescobaldi Dialogues (2007). We will never get tired of Tristano’s playing, whose round and bouncy touch brings to the score an extra, almost jazzy vitality without ever distorting the subject. But the ultimate pleasure arises when the pianist improvises himself as a composer and sows here and there a few tribute titles to his elders. Somewhere between pastiche (Toccata, On Bull Galliard in D), arrangement for percussive piano (On Girolamo Frescobaldi’s Quattro correnti) and futuristic variation (On Cristobal by Morales Circumdederunt), Francesco Tristano commits here the most beautiful sacrilege!

Frustrated by the pressure and formula of releasing music, SZA opted to take a different strategy. Over the course of two years, SZA sporadically released songs. Each song released was accompanied by a music video. During the second half of the video teasers for her next single would play. At the end of a teaser video titled “PSA” released on her 33rd birthday, a message written in morse code can be seen, which after being translated spells out “S.O.S.”. In an interview with Billboard released on November 16, 2022, SZA confirmed the theories about the album title and release date in December 2022. She further admitted to feeling “stressed” about meeting the release deadline, despite having denied that she had to meet any deadlines a month prior.
The sound of the album was described as “a varied palette”, combining “surf rock” and “grunge” elements, alongside “her beloved lo-fi beats”.

He takes Schumann’s Allegro molto vivace marking to heart and drives the first movement at a stimulatingly brisk pace. He also makes the most of the score’s dynamic markings, resulting in some pretty explosive contrasts–especially when the timpani loudly strikes or rolls. However, his one bad idea–going for an “authentic” period-style sound–proves fatal. Yes, the increased ensemble clarity and rhythmic acuity is striking, but employing, or simulating the sound of gut strings seriously undercuts the music’s power. The orchestral timbre is overly bright, as if someone had turned the treble way up. This brightness only gets worse in tutti passages, where it becomes strident.

The name “drama” came to us when reflecting on the EP and thinking “wow, we sound dramatic as hell on these songs, don’t we?” “drama” conveys more moods and feels than our previous work —like that sinking feeling knowing that it’s time to end a relationship; old friendships in despair; hyper-irrational crushes; and losing one’s sense of identity–all voiced on the EP.
We’re covering such a big range of emotions, “drama” just felt right. There’s also something about the iconic symbol of drama, the laughing and crying masks that represents the spectrum of emotion — beautiful and kind of creepy at the same time. Maybe just like the EP?

The performances at the Paris Hot Brass Club are among Steve Coleman’s most important musical manifestos. The alto saxophonist presented three different musical concepts there during a week in March 1995. The resulting, long-out-of-print records of the trilogy have now been brought together in a digipack. As a bonus, the re-mastered re-release received a fourth CD with previously unreleased material. The 24-page booklet shows the original covers, as well as the corresponding texts and a current essay by the leader. In it, he emphasizes his esoterically oriented musical creation process. The names of his bands at that time already indicate this: on the record “Myths, Modes and Means”, Steve Coleman and The Mystic Rhythm Society make an attempt to explore the structures of the universe and express these forms in a musical language. Integrated into rhythmically refined statements such as “Mystic Dub” and “Numerology”, extensive sound adventures can be enjoyed. On Steve Coleman and The Metrics’ “The Way Of Cipher”, the alto saxophonist combines his instrumental parts “Freestyle” with hip-hop sounds and the rappers Sub-Z, Black Indian and Kokayi. In the stormy ambience of bop, funk and free, Steve Coleman and Five Elements perform on “Curves Of Life”. In “Country Bama” and “I’m Burnin Up” the tenor saxophonist David Murray is a guest star. Coleman explains his concept on the bonus CD, and there are also two vital titles with the rappers on it.
