LIVING is Jan Gunnar Hoff’s first solo piano album. His personal blend of different styles and influences is presented in its purest form – simply music. Some of Hoff’s pieces are meditative and expressive, while others have a strong rhythmic nerve, creating contrast and variation in the programme.
Jan Gunnar Hoff has worked extensively as a bandleader and jazz artist since 1992, developing a distinctive musical style. His band with a.o. Audun Kleive and Bjørn Kjellemyr had its breakthrough at Vossa Jazz 1995 and later played at the London Jazz festival, Molde Int. Jazz festival and several major festivals and venues in Scandinavia.
Hoff’s jazz compositions have been performed in collaborations with Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Alex Acuña, Maria Joao, Mathias Eick and many others. He has made a number of albums in his own name and has composed 180 works for different ensembles. Hoff is also teaching as a professor at the Universities of Tromso and Kristiansand.
As a sideman Hoff has contributed to numerous recordings in different genres. He was the arranger and ensemble leader of Quiet Winter Night, Grammy-nominated for Best Surround Sound in 2013, an album where he successfully merges elements of jazz, folk and popular music.
Hoff’s collaboration with 2L and Morten Lindberg is continued on LIVING. This is a solo piano journey that carries Hoff’s artistic identity further into his own musical terrain, enhanced by the crystal clear recording from Sofienberg Church in Oslo.
‘Hoff’s writing and playing possesses an almost pop-like clarity and concision, but with a far richer vernacular.’ John Kelman, AllAboutJazz.com (more…)

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Ballet Suites (1961/1965) Blu-ray 1080p AVC DTS-HD 2.0

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky excelled at every form of composition but was particularly adept at orchestral music. His tone poems, concerti and symphonies are all basic repertoire compositions but it’s in the great ballet scores ‘Swan Lake,’ ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ and ‘Nutcracker,’ where we encounter the essence of Tchaikovsky’s genius. The ballets are models of brilliant orchestration, melodic invention and dramatic excellence. Most listeners are familiar with the ballets through the brief orchestral suites heard on this recording.

Herbert Von Karajan was one of the great conductors in all of music. On this recording, part of Decca’s Legendary Performers series, he leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s ballet suites. The recording lives up to its name with Von Karajan spotlighting the delightful orchestral details and drama in the scores. The orchestra plays with sumptuous tone and a keen sense of drama. Kudos to the Decca engineers for providing warm, natural sound.

One of the biggest-selling jazz albums of all time, not to mention bossa nova’s finest moment, Getz/Gilberto trumped Jazz Samba by bringing two of bossa nova’s greatest innovators — guitarist/singer João Gilberto and composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim — to New York to record with Stan Getz. The results were magic. Ever since Jazz Samba, the jazz marketplace had been flooded with bossa nova albums, and the overexposure was beginning to make the music seem like a fad. Getz/Gilberto made bossa nova a permanent part of the jazz landscape not just with its unassailable beauty, but with one of the biggest smash hit singles in jazz history — “The Girl From Ipanema,” a Jobim classic sung by João’s wife, Astrud Gilberto, who had never performed outside of her own home prior to the recording session. Beyond that, most of the Jobim songs recorded here also became standards of the genre — “Corcovado” (which featured another vocal by Astrud), “So Danço Samba,” “O Grande Amor,” a new version of “Desafinado.” With such uniformly brilliant material, it’s no wonder the album was such a success but, even apart from that, the musicians all play with an effortless grace that’s arguably the fullest expression of bossa nova’s dreamy romanticism ever brought to American listeners. Getz himself has never been more lyrical, and Gilberto and Jobim pull off the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication of the songs with a warm, relaxed charm. This music has nearly universal appeal; it’s one of those rare jazz records about which the purist elite and the buying public are in total agreement. Beyond essential. (more…)

George Gershwin’s Concerto in F was a response to demands for a ‘proper concerto’ after the success of Rhapsody in Blue, avoiding programmatic content while providing a feast of tunes both uplifting and nostalgic. Originally intended as music for a film, his up-beat Rhapsody No 2 describes the bustling Manhattan cityscape while under construction. Sourced from his hit musical Girl Crazy, I Got Rhythm Variations was Gershwin’s last full score. Pianist Orion Weiss is one of the most sought-after soloists and collaborators of his generation of young American musicians.

Remote Galaxy by Flint Juventino Beppe (2012) Blu-ray 1080i AVC Auro-3D 9.1 – HDCLUB

REMOTE GALAXY by Flint Juventino Beppe

Can the dualism of life, nature and art be expressed in pure music? This is the question the multi-talented composer Flint Juventino Beppe – formerly known as Fred Jonny Berg – has set out to answer. The album Remote Galaxy is a journey in time and space, a journey given meaning by the album’s music and philosophy. The music is uncompromisingly honest, with a genuine power of its own. Using well-known acoustic technology, the composer takes us to some unusual and, for most of us, unknown places.

Remote Galaxy continues the journey of 2L’s Grammy nominated album Flute Mystery, and again the Philharmonia Orchestra is conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy to interpret these adventurous scores. The composer’s deep spiritual interest in nature, philosophy and space is as central in the universe of Remote Galaxy as it was in Flute Mystery. Beppe’s music leaves a unique fingerprint in the artistic world: there is quite simply nothing like it.

The individual and inventive nature of his orchestral works demands a rich palette of instruments and an extended use of woodwinds, brass and organ. As solo instruments, the intense but delicate sound of the clarinet, the scope of the flute’s range of expression and the special characteristics of the rarely used viola da gamba make for an inimitable atmosphere captured in 2L’s innovative surround sound technology. With the introduction of height channels, acoustic reflections create a natural sound presence originating from both around and above the listener. The Auro-3D format on this Pure Audio Blu-ray features sound reproduction that is more realistic than anything you’ve heard before. It delivers a new standard in immersion, fully enveloping the audience in a cocoon of life-like audio.
5.1 + 7.1 + 9.1 SURROUND + STEREO produced in DXD (Digital eXtreme Definition 352kHz/24bit) by Lindberg Lyd AS. Facebook Photo Album from the Recording Sessions at Watford Colosseum

The whole spectrum of Beppe’s musical philosophy is mirrored in his works: “It’s really as simple as it is complicated – I breathe in what life has to offer, and breathe out what I have to offer life. I have given up trying to grasp what actually happens in the process from impression to expression.” Beppe is diagnosed with Tourette’s and Asperger’s syndromes, and his approach to life is self-reflective and as uncompromising as his music: “When I take a look at the mountains or the sky, I realize I cannot spend my time on anything but grandness. It’s that or nothing.”

Originally released in March of 1964, this legendary collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist Joao Gilbertocame at the end of the bossa nova craze Getz had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba. In fact, Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto as his record company didn’t want to compete with their own hit. The album ended up spending 96 weeks on the charts and won four Grammy Awards. Getz/Gilberto remains one of those rare cases in popular music where commercial success matches the artistic merit.
