MARINA has announced an extended deluxe edition of their current album “Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land”, which will be released on January 7th and will contain three new songs as well as two previously unreleased demo versions of tracks from the album, which was released in June 2021. The three new songs are titled “Pink Convertible”, “Free Woman” and “Happy Loner”. It’s already available now and can be heard below. In terms of content, “Happy Loner” deals with the fact that sometimes you feel so much under pressure from social pressure that you just want to be alone: “I’m on the edge / And I feel like everything’s too much”.

Since the rediscovery of Scott Joplin’s ragtime genius in the 1970s his music has been an important part of the popular/light classical repertoire. Yet though he called himself with some justification “The King of Ragtime Writers” he was not a brilliant pianist; he was actually a trained violinist and cornet player and was lead singer of the Texas Medley Quartette. This wide experience helped to make his piano rags full of interest. All the same, most recordings concentrate on the most familiar works and ignore the many other superb pieces in Joplin’s substantial output. This new album from New York pianist Marilyn Nonken (Professor of Music at New York University’s Steinhardt School) includes some well-known works and some rarities. Rags, concert waltzes and other novelty pieces show brilliance and a well-honed craft.

At the time, Marillion’s remarkable, full-fledged 1983 debut Script for a Jester’s Tear was considered an odd bird: replete with Peter Gabriel face paint and lengthy, technical compositions, Marillion ushered in a new generation of prog rock that bound them forever to the heroics of early day Genesis. Intricate, complex, and theatrical almost to a fault, Script for a Jester’s Tear remains the band’s best and sets the bar for their later work. Filled with extraordinary songs that remained staples in the band’s live gigs, the album begins with the poignant title track, on which Fish leads his band of merry men on a brokenhearted tour de force that culminates with the singer decrying that “…the game is over.” “He Knows You Know,,” a song sprinkled with drug paranoia and guilt; as the song veers to its chorus, Fish announces, “Fast feed, crystal fever, swarming through a fractured mind.” If “The Web” hints at a grain of commercialism, “Garden Party” is a joyous anthem that showcases Marillion at the peak of its powers. Bogged down by some hilariously over-the-top British poetry, “Chelsea Monday” may be one of the album’s lesser moments (if there are any), but the magical “Forgotten Sons” concludes the opus magnificently. Luckily for Marillion fans, EMI released a remastered version of Script with two different versions of “Market Square Heroes,” “Three Boats Down from the Candy,” “Grendel,” “Chelsea Monday,” the demo of “He Knows You Know,” and an alternate track titled “Charting the Single.” A vital piece for any Marillion head and an essential work for any self-respecting first- or second-generation prog rock fan. – John Franck

Über seinen Vater, der den Fünfjährigen mit dem Akkordeonspiel vertraut machte, entdeckte Kendlinger seine Liebe zur Musik. Mit 17 zog es den gebürtigen Tiroler auf die Bühne. Bis 1994 trat er als Leiter des Alpina Quintetts auf. In diesem Jahr erfolgte die Gründung der Klassik-Schmiede DaCapo in Kufstein. 1997 beteiligte er sich maßgeblich an der Entstehung der für Wagner-Interpretationen bekannten Tiroler Festspiele Erl .Gemeinsam mit der langjährigen Ballettmeisterin der Wiener Staatsoper und Choreographin der Wiener Neujahrskonzerte, Gerlinde Dill (1933-2008), gründete Kendlinger 1998 Das Österreichische K&K Ballett. 2002 rief er das eigene Sinfonieorchester, die &K Philharmoniker, ins Leben. Ein Jahr später formierte Kendlinger den K&K Opernchor. Sein Debüt als Dirigent gab er 2004 im Leipziger Gewandhaus. Im folgenden Jahr spielte er in der Laeiszhalle Hamburg mit Berühmte Märsche seine erste von bislang dreizehn CDs ein. Als Komponist machte Kendlinger mit der sinfonischen Dichtung Der verlorene Sohn (UA April 2006, Gewandhaus Leipzig), dem Familien-Marsch (UA Dezember 2008, Konzerthaus Berlin), dem Marsch Kaiser, Wilder Kaiser (UA Mai 2012, Passionsspielhaus Thiersee), seiner ersten Sinfonie Manipulation (UA September 2012, Philharmonie in Lemberg) und meditativen Dichtung Heilung (UA Juni 2013, Dom zu Ebbs) sowie dem seiner Frau Larissa gewidmeten ersten Klavierkonzert (UA Mai 2014, Congress Graz) auf sich aufmerksam. Sidney Matthew Sweet is an American rock singer-songwriter and musician. He was part of the burgeoning music scene in Athens, Georgia, during the 1980s before gaining commercial success in the 1990s. “100% Fun” is his fifth album. The album was met with moderate commercial success and favorable reviews. The single “Sick of Myself” reached #2 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart and appeared on the top 100 pop song charts of the day. Critic David Browne of Entertainment Weekly, who included 100% Fun on his year’s-best list, wrote in his review that it “makes you feel as if a good pop hook can solve any crisis”. The title of the album was derived from Kurt Cobain’s 1994 suicide note.

Matthew Carl Lien is a Yukon, Canada based World music singer-songwriter and producer. His primary lyrical and musical focus is on environmental and cultural themes. Preferring his native San Diego to Los Angeles, he discovered Signature Sound recording studios in San Diego, California, which is owned by his friend and musician/producer Luis Arteaga whom he met earlier at Mix Masters, where he recorded most of his albums to date, with the exception of his Hybrid SACD “Arctic Refuge” which was recorded at Bryan Adams’ Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He now has a fan base of millions in Taiwan and China, where he is known for his environmental music and his work with aboriginal and traditional cultures.

Formed by ex-members of modern jazz ensemble Blue Rondo a la Turk, Matt Bianco evolved into one of England’s top jazz-pop bands.
The contemporary jazz group Matt Bianco enjoyed considerable success in the ’80s, but the band was short-lived. It originally included a singer named Basia, who soon after the band’s demise embarked on a successful solo career, keeping Bianco keyboardist Danny White as a collaborator. More than 20 years later, Matt Bianco has reformed, and from the sound of their reunion album, Matt’s Mood (Decca), the group members seem to be enjoying making music together again. Basia and the band’s other original singer, Mark Reilly, share vocal responsibilities; the Brazilian “Ordinary Day” features harmonies unmistakably Basia, and while Reilly sings lead on the jazzy “Wrong Side of the Street,” Basia takes a chorus in her native Polish. The playful “Ronnie’s Samba” salutes deceased saxophonist Ronnie Ross, who played in Matt Bianco’s original incarnation. One quibble: The fadeout at the end of the closing track, “Matt’s Mood III,” makes the tune feel unfinished-such a vigorous instrumental jam really calls for a decisive ending-but overall this is a fun and welcomed comeback album.

At the age of 14, Jordi Savall attended a rehearsal of Mozart’s Requiem. He was so strongly moved by the music that he decided to become a musician himself … From 2021 to 2023, Savall again worked intensively on Mozart’s last work as a musician and intellectual. Together with soloists, the choir La Capella Nacional de Catalunya and the orchestra Le Concert des Nations, a new interpretation was developed in intensive rehearsals, and six concerts, which is now available. Says Savall: “Rarely has a composition been so strongly shaped by the genius and suffering of a human being.”
