When Mozart took up the popular genre of the serenade, it was to transcend it and lend it new lustre. A festive masterpiece of simplicity and emotion, his Gran Partita quickly became a genuine ‘hit’! Thanks to the distinctive, spellbinding timbres of their period instruments, the members of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin give a unique flavour to these two extraordinary serenades, over which there blows – as it were – a tremendous wind of freedom.

Blazers van de Akademie für Alte Musik hebben Mozarts serenades nr 10 (KV361) beter bekend als “Gran Partita” en nr. 11 (K.375) opgenomen. Beide werken worden uitgevoerd op authentieke instrumenten. Met name de luchtige “Gran Partita” werd in Mozarts tijd een ware hit. Zelfs tot op de dag van vandaag is dit werk nog steeds geliefd is én is het regelmatig op verschillende podia te horen.

The Akademie für alte Musik Berlin was among the pioneers in historically informed performance in what was then East Germany in the early 1980s, and the group continues to issue innovative material. The Mozart wind serenades and partitas have not often been played on historical instruments, and this release, pairing the K. 361 and K. 375 serenades, shows what can be done with these instruments. One might have wished that the documentation had specified what instruments were used and that the third large Mozart wind work from this period, the Serenade for Winds, K. 388, had been included, for, in that strikingly serious work, Mozart pushed the winds to their limits. That’s what happens, albeit with a slightly less extreme sound, in this pair of serenades, where the historical instruments buzz, whine, and punch sharply. These sounds were ruthlessly bred out of wind instruments over the course of the 19th century, and for those unfamiliar with hearing Mozart played this way, it may be quite a shock. However, just a short period of ear readjustment is all that’s necessary to appreciate what’s happening here. Mozart drastically redefined the wind serenade in these works, making light occasional music into something of near-symphonic depth, and the timbres of his instruments were a key part of the endeavor. Here, the colors all show through, and what at first sounds gawky is, in fact, at the center of some of the most brilliantly original sound worlds Mozart ever conceived. AKAMUS is aided by fine Teldex Studio sound from Harmonia Mundi that reveals many small details.
