The New York City Ballet performs in Paris after an eight year absence. The production revolves around three great French composers who inspired NYCB founder George Balanchine: Charles Gounod, Maurice Ravel and Georges Bizet. The four ballets performed encapsulate Balanchine’s genius and his very own neo-classical style, they also provide a particular insight on the bonds that tied Balanchine to France. What is known today as Walpurgisnacht Ballet was a ballet choreographed for the opera Faust at the Paris Opera in 1975, it premiered as an independent piece in New York in 1980. Sonatine set to a music by Maurice Ravel, was created by two New York City Ballet’s French principals, the recently departed Violette Verdy and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. La Valse was originally composed by Ravel for the Ballets Russes and Serge Diaghilev, then exiled in France, shortly before Balanchine entered the company. Symphony in C better known as Le Palais de Cristal, premiered at the Paris Opera.

Why, judging by the survived music scores, different bodies of musicians were allowed for performing many works by composers of the Baroque epoch? What are the rules according to which the baroque instrumental ensembles were being formed? How to be about modern transcriptions of the ancient compositions? There is the only way to answer these questions, that is — to comprehend the special features of the baroque music, its key categories. The notion of trio widespread in that epoch deserves special attention here.
The baroque trio is a much wider category than trio in classical or romantic music since it indicates not the number of performers but the number and correlation of the musical tissue’s fibres: two expressive melodic voices are based on harmonic foundation of the figured bass (continuo part usually performed by one, two or three musicians). Such trio mode of musical thinking was as customary and natural for baroque composers as melodies to the accompaniment — for musicians of the next epoch. Thanks to the universal principles of the trio boundaries between the genres of the baroque instrumental music are transparent: one triple-voiced basis may be realized by varied bodies of performers.

When, at the end of the 18th century in Germany, they talked of the “great Bach”, it was usually not Johann Sebastian they had in mind, who was admired at the time by just a few connoisseurs, but his second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel in whose powerful talent Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven delighted and whose influence extended even to the early romantics: Weber, Hoffmann, Mendelssohn. Philippe Herreweghe, principal conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, has devoted himself for over ten years to fresh and invigorating readings of the (pre-) Romantic repertoire. Together with the Collegium Vocale, founded in 1970 by Philippe Herreweghe himself, and superb soloists they perform Dvořák’s Requiem. A modern and stylistically flexible symphony orchestra, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra demonstrates an artistic flair which allows for a variety of styles and occupies a unique position in Flanders. Collegium Vocale Gent were one of the first ensembles to use new ideas about baroque performance practice in vocal music. Their authentic, text-oriented and rhetorical approach gave the ensemble the transparent sound with which it would acquire world fame and perform at the major concert venues and music festivals all over the world. With this release, Accentus Music completes its Beethoven DVD trilogy with Herbert Blomstedt and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.
More than 200 years after its premiere at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Isabelle Faust, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Martin Helmchen have congenially mastered the artistic challenge of Beethoven’s gemstone. Under Herbert Blomstedt’s sensitive direction, the soloists unite chamber musical intimacy together with virtuoso sophistication – and prove once again that the Triple Concerto is an unduly underestimated, much too rarely programmed masterpiece.
With the composer’s 5th Symphony, Blomstedt succeeds in achieving an entirely new perspective of this work. In the culmination of his three-year, intensive reenactment of Beethoven’s cosmos, the impressive sound that characterizes the Swedish grand seigneur’s conducting is heralded by transparency rather than showmanship, relevance instead of pathos, and tenderness in place of sentimentality.
This release marks the completion of the DVD/Blu-ray trilogy that started with Beethoven’s Ninth, Sixth and Seventh Symphonies. It also leads the way to the release of all Beethoven Symphonies in June, recorded between 2014 and 2017 at the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig – just in time for the maestro’s 90th birthday in July of this year.

In this all-Beethoven program, Ozawa conducts the popular Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 2 & 7, performed with his fellow colleagues of the Saito Kinen Orchestra.
In 2015, the commemorative first year as OMF, Seiji Ozawa conducted Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 for the first time in 15 years. In 2016, he conducted Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in Matsumoto for the first time in 23 years.
In addition to these two performances, bonus content features rare footage from the Celebrating Seiji at 80! Gala Concert. A total of 300 top-class musicians gathered from around the world on September 1, 2015 to celebrate Festival Director Ozawa’s 80th birthday. The Daily Telegraph describes Nikolaj Znaider as “the most stimulating young musician playing today, drawing on musical intelligence, perception and dynamism to give performances of rare intensity.” This release presents one of the world’s foremost violinists playing two landmark concertos, accompanied by the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester ‐ “one of Europe’s finest orchestras” (The Guardian) ‐ under the baton of its music director Riccardo Chailly.
It was the Gewandhausorchester that, in 1845, first performed Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E minor. Mendelssohn himself had conducted Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major several times and helped this milestone in the history of music to its great breakthrough.

You might want to consider Norah Jones: Live at Ronnie Scott’s as something of a musical palate cleanser, especially if you’re prone to go for larger, arena rock like concert videos. This particular performance is absolutely minimalist from both a staging standpoint (as can probably be gleaned from the almost unavoidably repetitive screenshots accompanying this review), but also due to the fact that Jones is part of a trio. There’s a refreshing intimacy to this concert, one that harkens back to smoky jazz clubs of yore, with earnest chanteuses crooning songs of love and loss, but what sets this performance apart is the fact that Jones of course accompanies herself on piano, sings her own material, and has a really winningly winsome quality that doesn’t completely mask a kind of steely, if still sweet, foundation.

Don Luis: a Spaniard at the court of Louis XIII… Luis de Briceño’s arrival in France was marked by a wave of enthusiasm. The Spaniard was at the heart of a polemic that questioned the supremacy of the lute, an instrument cherished by French music lovers of the beginning of the 17th century. Our rekindled interest lies not in this controversy but in the beauty of Briceño’s compositions and the freedom they offer the musicians who play them. This man of incisive wit and character, nicknamed « El Fenix de Paris », once said about the polemic he caused: « Todos se burlan de mi y yo me burlo de todos, porque si me llaman asno ellos son neçios y tontos… » « Everyone makes fun of me and I make fun of everyone, because they call me a donkey they are crazy and foolish idiots… » On this album discover le Poème Harmonique in a repertoire bearing the marked touch of popular Spanish music, accompanied by the delightful song of Isabelle Druet and Claire Lefilliâtre.
