The Elbphilharmonie, the “hall of wonders” (The Guardian), is undoubtedly the new landmark of Hamburg, a monumental synthesis of breath-taking architecture, a unique location and a world-class concert hall. In varying instrumentation the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under the baton of Principal Conductor Thomas Hengelbrock and several top-class soloists explores in the opening concert the possibilities of the Elbphilharmonie’s Grand Hall and its acoustics with an exciting programme that spans across all musical eras, from the Renaissance to the present. It culminates in a brand-new commissioned work, created especially for this occasion by the most important living German composer, Wolfgang Rihm.
“A striking building, a scintillating concert!” (The New York Times). BONUS: This documentary accompanies the formation process of this grand building, from the first sketch plans to the rehearsals before it´s festive inauguration and includes statements by the architects Pierre de Meuron and Jacques Herzog, the acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, Christoph Lieben-Seutter, Thomas Hengelbrock and more. Alongside the Three Pieces, the Six Pieces and the Three Chorales that constitute the body of Franck’s organ works, there is also an entire series of organ works dating from Franck’s youth. These pieces, the majority of which exist only in manuscript, were published after Franck’s death by his son.

These works, often small in scale and clearly intended for organists to use during services, form an impressive collection. Even though the influences of his teachers and models are clearly to be heard, a fair proportion of these works already bear the stamp of the mature composer and pater seraphicus.

Another Country is Rod Stewart’s brand new studio album via Capitol Records. One of rock’s most gifted storytellers is back to continue the story he began with 2013’s Time.

“I’ve found that the only way to write songs is to be as personal and honest as possible, And when my last album was so well-received it gave me the confidence to keep on writing, and to examine and write about different things. It also gave me the freedom to experiment with different sounds like reggae, ska and Celtic melodies,” says Stewart. (more…)

Before Woodstock and Monterey Pop, there was Festival. From 1963 through 1966, Murray Lerner visited the annual Newport Folk Festival to document a thriving, idealistic musical movement as it reached its peak as a popular phenomenon. Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash, the Staple Singers, Pete Seeger, Son House, and Peter, Paul and Mary were just a few of the legends who shared the stage at Newport, treating audiences to a range of folk music that encompassed the genre’s roots in blues, country, and gospel as well as its newer flirtations with rock and roll. Shooting in gorgeous black and white, Lerner juxtaposes performances with snapshot interviews with artists and their fans, weaving footage from four years of the festival into an intimate record of a pivotal time in music—and in American culture at large.

The 23-year-old Gioachino Rossini completed his masterpiece Il barbiere di Siviglia with incredible speed – legend has it in just 13 days – which Rossini attributed to ‘facility and lots of instinct’. He adapted Pierre-Augustin Beaumarchais’ play Le Barbier de Séville, part of a dramatic trilogy that also inspired Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. Within a few decades of its 1816 premiere, Il barbiere di Siviglia had been seen around the world, reaching opera houses in New York, Buenos Aires, Trinidad and Ecuador. The opera is characterized by youthful energy and bold wit: these qualities are brought to the fore in Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s colourful and inventive production, a popular favourite at the Royal Opera House since its premiere in 2005.

Il barbiere di Siviglia has all the right ingredients for comic chaos: an imprisoned young woman, her lecherous guardian and a young noble suitor. Skilfully plotting behind the scenes is Figaro – an irrepressible and inventive character in whom many have seen a resemblance to the young Rossini himself. The score fizzes with musical brilliance, from Figaro’s famous entrance aria ‘Largo al factotum’ to the frenzy of the Act I finale, when the five principal voices all pile on top of each other.

The Afghan Whigs – Black Love {20th Anniversary} (1996/2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:21:49 minutes | 2,95 GB | Genre: Rock

Recorded: August–September 1995, Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee

The Afghan Whigs hit a high-water mark with 1993’s Gentlemen, an album that upped their game musically and plumbed the depth of Greg Dulli’s self-loathing with its tales of a ladies’ man whose attitude toward women (and himself) borders on the malignant. It was the band’s finest and most most ambitious work, and the band was faced with the challenge of trying to top it. The Afghan Whigs’ follow-up, 1996’s Black Love, ultimately missed the mark, though not for a lack of trying. The performances were every bit as strong as those on Gentlemen, as Rick McCollum’s mix of hard rock riffing and wailing slide guitar grew even stronger and the rhythm section laid down a beat that hit hard but retained a bit of their more graceful R&B influences. And vintage soul and funk were a significantly bigger part of the band’s formula this time out, with the keyboards on “Bulletproof,” the strings and percussion on “Blame, Etc.,” and the hip-hop-influenced percussion on “Going to Town” serving as key signifiers. While the band was in great form on Black Love, Greg Dulli’s songwriting wasn’t as impressive; Black Love lacks the thematic unity and power of Gentlemen, the melodies just aren’t as compelling, and while songs like “My Enemy,” “Honky’s Ladder,” and “Night by Candlelight” are striking and well crafted, their strength points to the fact many of the other songs don’t quite click. And as a lyricist, here Dulli was reworking the themes he’d explored in depth on Gentlemen and Congregation, and by this time he’d just about run out of juice. The Afghan Whigs were just too good a band to make an album that wasn’t worth hearing, and the musicians blaze hard on Black Love, but the closer one scrutinizes the work, the more this record feels like a misstep after the excellence of Gentlemen and Congregation.

Congregation was the Afghan Whigs’ breakthrough album and has been called the grunge era’s most overlooked masterpiece. The album was very well received by critics, and the band achieved a cult following, receiving offers from major record labels. They eventually signed with Elektra Records. Stylistically distinct from other Sub Pop grunge music, the album features songs with themes of pleasure and guilt, dysfunctional relationships and sexual deviancy.

If there is one album fully deserving of a coming of age celebration, it is The Afghan Whigs’ Gentlemen. Since its original release in October of 1993, Gentlemen’s lore has grown in stature as fans new and old continue to embrace the album. 33 1/3 published a book about the album in 2008 and Stereogum proclaimed just last month, “From its bombastic opening to its understated end, Gentlemen remains a fine example of what exactly independent rock music is capable of accomplishing.”

• On June 9, 2010, the legendary Les Paul would have celebrated his 95th birthday. To honor his memory, Jeff Beck and a host of special guests, amongst them Imelda May, Gary U.S. Bonds, Brian Setzer and Trombone Shorty, took the stage of New York City’s Iridium Jazz Club and performed a selection of rock classics. They chose the Iridium because Paul played there every week for years.
• The performances are great, filled with terrific energy and passion, and though as usual Beck shines, the star of the night is May. She delivers top-notch renditions of “Poor Boy”, “Cry Me A River”, “My Baby Left Me”, “High High The Moon”, “The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise”, and “Vaya Con Dios” amongst others.
• The entire show has a fantastic period feel. Obviously, the music has a lot to do with it, but the hair styles, the clothes, and the musicians’ attitude are also right. I’ve seen a lot of tributes where various stars would gather to honor one of their own, but many of them would lack chemistry. This is certainly not the case here – the entire show is about chemistry (see “Please Mr. Jailer” and “The Girl Can’t Help It”).
