You can often judge musicians by the company they keep. Float the Edge, the latest album from pianist-composer Angelica Sanchez, features her alongside two of the most sought-after rhythm-section musicians on the scene: veteran bassist Michael Formanek and rising-star Tyshawn Sorey, both acclaimed leader-composers in their own right. To be released via Clean Feed Records on March 25, 2017, Float the Edge sees this earthy, expansive trio perform Sanchez’s compositions, as well as several free improvisations. “A lot of what we do as a trio – and what each of us does living a life in this music – is take things to the edge, taking the risk to jump off without really knowing where you’re going to land,” the pianist says. “When it works, you feel like you’re floating – it’s beautiful.” Even the pieces she composed for the album were relatively spare on the page, giving the players room to imagine the music on the fly. “I didn’t want to have too much information in the tunes – I just wanted to set a mood that would inspire improvisation,” Sanchez explains. “Mike and Tyshawn are players who naturally develop the music on the spot, and I always have faith that they’ll play something better than I could’ve imagined. Also, unlike with a lot of piano trios, it isn’t just the piano leading the way all the time. I know I can play anything and they’ll run with the music, shape it. This album is really about going on a journey – for us and for the listener.”

Enlightened Rogues is the sixth studio album by American rock band the Allman Brothers Band. Produced by Tom Dowd, the album was released in February 1979 in the United States by Capricorn Records and PolyGram Records elsewhere. The Allman Brothers Band had broken up in 1976 following internal turmoil, amplified by escalating drug use. The band members splintered into different acts — among those Great Southern, Sea Level, and the Gregg Allman Band. Guitarist Dickey Betts approached his bandmates in 1978 with the prospects of a reunion. After two former members declined to return, they added new members: guitarist Dan Toler and bassist David Goldflies. Living together in Sarasota, Florida, they rehearsed and wrote the material for their next album in fall 1978.
They began recording Enlightened Rogues that December, and recording stretched into the new year. Sessions took place in Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida with producer Tom Dowd, who worked on a trio of early Allman Brothers albums. The group stayed at a home overlooking Biscayne Bay, which promoted unity within the members. The recording process was smooth and pleasant, with members showing courtesy to one another in comparison to ill feelings felt earlier. The album’s title comes from a quote original guitarist Duane Allman used to describe the band: “The world is made of two great schools, enlightened rogues and religious fools.”

“…one of contemporary jazz’s great performers…” so reads the prestigious Guardian newspaper’s assessment of English pianist John Taylor. As house pianist at London’s legendary Ronny Scott’s jazz club, Taylor accompanied many of the icons of jazz, and in so doing honed his individual style into what became one of the most important voices on the European jazz scene. The gigs and recordings of his own groups, his long-time association with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, his many ECM trio recordings with Peter Erskine and Palle Danielsonn and groups lead by the likes of Jan Garbarek and John Surman established Taylor’s importance. Taylor’s 1973 MPS trio album Decipher features two top players, bassist Chris Laurence and drummer Tony Levin, who perfectly compliment Taylor’s wide-ranging style on an album that offers the listener a delicious taste of his compositions. The virtuoso sprint of Cipher melds into the varying tempos and emotions of Wait For Me, whereas Leaping is a pointillist abstract exchange between the three. The emotive jazz waltz Speak to Me plays some magical slight-of-hand with the time, and Song For a Child sings out as a soft-spoken ballad. White Magic powers through as a hard-swinging elixir for all that ails. Taylor’s second album as leader presents a master composer/player at full maturity – what a joy that this music is available once again.

Directed by SLIPKNOT’s own M.Shawn Crahan, aka Clown, Day of The Gusano documents the Iowa band’s first ever visit to the country in December 2015 and features exclusive interviews with SLIPKNOT’s members talking about the importance of their fanbase and the band’s long awaited first ever show in Mexico City.

It’s been a surreal life of rock and roll for SLIPKNOT and the fact that the dreams still go on for us is simply incredible. “Bliss” is a pop album by French singer Vanessa Paradis. It is her fourth studio album and contains the single “Commando”. The album proved to be one of her least successful efforts, with none of the singles reaching the No. 1 spot in France as anticipated. However, it is notable because American actor Johnny Depp performed on some of the tracks. It also marks the recording debut of Lily Rose Depp, Johnny and Vanessa’s daughter, as she is featured on one track. Despite a weak chart run, Bliss spawned a few minor hit singles. The primary one was “Pourtant”, which is often regarded as Paradis’ most poetic work. Singles “Commando” and “Que fait la vie” were the other single releases off this album. Fans also note Bliss for its extensive artwork, all of which was hand-painted by Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp, with use of watercolors. The album topped the French album charts and remained on the charts for 49 weeks.

This album offers some of the most acclaimed Monk compositions recorded in the key of Jazz Manouche. Although New York’s Twisted Sister wore makeup and stage costumes, the group was completely unlike other glam-metal bands of the early ’80s. The group’s 1983 major-label debut, „You Can’t Stop Rock N’ Roll“, is more akin musically to such harder-edged metal outfits as Motorhead and Metallica, while on stage, the band adopted a more freakish persona (while bands like Motley Crue did the opposite). Twisted Sister’s U.S. debut wasn’t the commercial breakthrough that its next release was (1984’s hit „Stay Hungry“), but it did the job of introducing the band to the rest of America and solidified the band’s standing in the U.K. (where Twisted Sister had already released an independent record).
